Excellent for a quick escape. Suiciding with this doesn't cause durability loss, so if you need to wipe or lose aggro, die with this instead of getting killed.

Dangerous high damage AoE, make sure someone has aggro on the mobs your going to AoE like a mage or tank before using this. Pyroclasm gives it about 1-2% chance to stun the mobs every plus.

Not so much, Pryoclasm (the chance to stun) is not very useful. The preceeding talent to not lose cast time is useful.

A very useful skill, in a raid or such, if wipe is inevitable, start casting hellfire so you wont lose durability from dying.

Another clever way of using this spell is in places like scholo where if none of your team mates have the key to open the locked door, you can just hellfire n rez again behind the door, giving entry to your team.

Fun dps Aoe spell overall.

It can kill you, but with healing back up, a great way to clear lower non elite mobs in instances. With so few AoEs for locks and the fact that it can be brought up at any moment, it might not save your behind, but will let you go out with a bang.

Be warned that this causes x damage to you every second, just like the surrounding mobs.

I was testing this out for the first time and thought you only got one tick of damage. Ended up almost dying in-city XD

Rain of Fire does 303 DPS, this does 306. The one advantage is it's very mana efficient.

Here's an effective way of using Hellfire. Summon a Voidwalker if you don't have him out already then have him use Sacrifice. It absorbs the damage from Hellfire too.

I use this as a ganking tool against melee classes.

Throw on your DoT's (CoE works well to buy you time), but if they get to you, activate Hellfire and sacrifice the VW for an extra 3k damage to them.

Not super efficient but scares the hell out of them :)

Hellfire is amazing for PvP, as it can be used to prevent polymorphs, seductions, and blinds!

Of course using Hellfire to prevent a crowd-control is not something you'd see from your everyday player, but it's one of those little things that separates a good player from a great player.

Warlocks can use this to get past certain doors and gates (such as the Scholomance door; this was a BIG help for my Blood Elf Warlock, since Scholo was one of the instances that was "abandoned" when TBC came out) that they don't have the key for; simply Life Tap until you get the "Fizzled" message, then use Hellfire. You get where you want to go, and your gear isn't any more damaged than it was before you killed yourself.

If you casting Hellfire you've got a chase to get out from polymorph, root or fear, because you take damage:D
So, if you see a mage casting polymorph you'd do: cast hellfire.

It should be noted that while Rain of Fire now can both criticially hit and gain the 200% crit bonus of Ruin as well, that this spell does neither.

I agree that you can get some nice crits out of Rain of Fire; however, HellFire is FAR faster DPS. Damage occurs every second, not every couple to few seconds, while they run out of the circle that is now clearly painted on the ground for them, how lame is that... I like the visual, but now they can see where they need to move to eheheheh

i may try this out as an experiment, find a safe place to test it. like in a horde capitol. i'd have my VW out, and use scarifice, and use the hellfire spell to see if i cna absorb the dammage while i can dmaage any of my foes.

In it's current state this spell is useless for anything but killing yourself in order to avoid a repairbill or otherwise. It's got a high mana cost and damage nowhere near Rain of Fire's, it also seems Hellfire can't crit while Rain of Fire can.

You can activate Soul Link: http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=19028 to transfer 20% of that damage to you demon.
So it will reduce the damage you take from 83 to 67 per sec.

It's not something I expect from any PVP Warlock as it will destroy 4-7k mana depending on what your base mana is.
I'd rather be a healthy sheep regaining full mana and health.

i just saw some warlock kill himself with this infront of his trainer...god thats funny! but yeah....this is an amazing spell for aoe dmg....new sacrifice doesnt kill ur voidwalker just takes a little of his health...and if ur demo spec with Demonic Brutality, the shield from sac. absorbs even more dmg <3

Yeah, I've had a lot of success with running around pulling 3~4 similar leveled mobs with CoA and Corruption, between each one I would throw the voidwalker on the last one I pulled so he'd torment it off of me while I pulled the next, once I had him taking the aggro for most, I'd get in the middle, throw up the sacrifice shield, and cast hell fire, generally with soul link you can end up killing all of the mobs taking very little damage, or if you time it right and jump out of the hell fire and backwards from the mobs, they'll die from the last tick of the DoTs. Though, I'm only level 34 and I have no points in destruction or affliction, everything is in demonology. Good luck.

If you have Nether Protection then you need not worry much about Fire Damage taken, I've always viewed this as a melee class scaring spell; if they get too close you hellfire them till they back off.

I think I finally found a use for this spell (or at least a fun way to use it that doesn't necessarily involve killing yourself). Spec 51-point demonology for metamorphosis, with the rest of your points in destruction. The ordering of stuff is key here.

1. Get into a crowd of stuff to AoE, put corruption on a few things. This gives you a chance to increase fire spell damage.
2. Cast metamorphosis, then activate trinkets and CDs.
3. Cast immolation aura (demon) and hellfire at the same time

Neither of those two fire PbAoEs can crit, but each one ticks for about 800 every second on my level 74 warlock with 1100 demonology-enhanced spellpower. With soul link, some of the damage done to you from this spell is done to your felguard instead, and with the tier-1 talent that heals your pet for a percentage of the damage you do, your pet has no chance of dying.

Aggro is actually a big problem with this tactic. Doing this in instances, I can do 2k dps to a single target using these two spells (at level 74!). Its hard to live long or prevent knockbacks or interruptions when doing the AoE in a real multi-mob situation, but on target dummies I can reach about 4.8k-5k DPS on 4 targets.

Could this be the purpose behind hellfire? Who knows, but try it out. It's kinda fun the first time you do it!

A useful combo is to roll a destro lock with a holy smite priest. Round up a bunch of mobs, the lock casts hellfire while the priest spams holy nova. My friend and I have a lot of fun dropping 7-10 mobs this way. The holy nova seems to keep the lock health up and the extra dps added to the hellfire burns the mobs down pretty quick.

This spell is useful in the Twin Valkyr fight if you pick up the Light Essence. The light damage you absorb during the encounter is actually fire damage, so if you use Hellfire prior to the fight when you have Light Essence, you can actually gain stacks of the light aura without taking any damage. At 100 stacks you gain Empowered Light, so its best to gain 90-99 stacks of the buff prior to the fight, and then crash into a light ball to do serious damage early in the fight. Watch out for your threat though!

I have heard some say that Nether Protection can help mitigate some of the damage from Hellfire. Is that the case?

I have also heard some say that, when you have a very tight bunch of trash-mobs, Hellfire can be more effective/efficient than Rain of Fire. (Even though RoF is 675/s and Hellfire is 451/s... ) It leaves me scratching my head, but I'm curious to know what you think.

And yeah, I set up a macro to use with my Voidwalker's bubble in order to make this spell more useful in an AOE circumstance.

I also am curious to know how you would compare Seed of Corruption as an AOE option, since we're already talking about a warlock's other two AOE spells.

Being an Engineer, I and some guildies have joked about me running into the middle of a massive trash-pull, using Hellfire, and then detonating myself with one of those Goblin bombs, just before reaching bottom.

(Edit: Might be a fun way to get the Leeeeeeeeeeeeeroy! achievement)

This spell also spawns city guards as if a horde were causing damage to an npc.
Only one guard spawns though.

do the math, hellfire does 451 damage PER SECOND, so 451*8(the duration of rain of fire) = 3608 which means this spell easily does more damage than rain of fire, and the fact it lasts almost twice as long means that you actualy are using less mana per point of damage, so, if you were to say, have a priest bubble you before you do this, you'll actualy be doing way more damage and using far less mana than rain of fire spamming, so, with that said, this spell is actualy VERY useful, you just have to know how to use it =)

Also, there is something seriously wrong with how the overall damage and/or the damage per second is calculated with rain of fire, check it out, by my calculations, rain of fire should do 337.5 damage per second if the overall damage output is 2.7k, yet the number there is twice that. Correct me if I'm wrong lol it might be just wowhead too.

Case solved, rain of fire doesn't do damage every second, it's every TWO seconds, meaning the actual dps is half the number shown, meaning that hellfire does indeed to more dps, again, correct me if I'm wrong.

And yes, hellfire definitely does do damage per second as indicated.

Hellfire is going to be changed in Cataclysm to not deal damage to the Warlock and is being geared to be the aoe used by Demonology according to a blue.

"The intent for Hellfire is for it to be a specialty of Demonology warlocks. Affliction would use Seed of Corruption and Destruction would use Rain of Fire."

My least favorite lock skill, coming from a tank. Some noob locks will run to you after you make a large pull, hellfire until they're nearly dead, and steal agro without care. The healer gets frantic, and the lock thinks they're leet on the meter because they life tap and hellfire back and forth, while the healer isn't sure who needs more healing, the tank or the lock.

Had a run where I refused to continue until the lock stopped using it because it created agro issues and wipe concerns, after the lock died 3 pulls in a row. I was actually kicked from group! I don't think there is enough education out there about how dangerous not only this skill can be to the warlock, but about how terribad it is to use in dungeons and raids.

My biggest issues with it come from the lvl 30-50 range users. It needs to be redone, either reducing the agro produced, or damage reduced to make it less enticing to use as a main skill.

So while you're in Molten Core, (as unlikely as it is now) and you might have some FiR gear on, spam this :D

Rank 1 is good for detecting Rogues ( when your http://www.wowhead.com/spell=47847#taught-by-npc is on cd ) and quickly taking out Snakes ( Snake Trap ) .

This will rule in cataclysm against melee classes, As demo lock you can charge your enemy and use Immolation aura+hellfire with your dots and demon hurting the enemy. They can either remain in 8yards range and burn or run away and be unable to damage the lock and get nuked by spells. Ofcourse the enemy can interrupt your fire school, but then you are free to cast your shadow spells without fear of being interrupted. :)

in cata all lock specs will have a specific AoE affliction will use SoC demo will use this (they will also get a talent to beable to move while casting it and it will no longer cause damage to you but thats no part of the talent) and destro will use RoF

So far the tooltip still says it damages the user, and with the 64% base mana cost, it's still a hefty cost. I think Rain of Fire is still the best AoE choice outside of the nasty effect Soulburn + SoC can do when it detonates, that just seems nasty for Affliction Locks. I guess we'll have to wait and see if the tooltip changes before or at launch of Cata.

They probably decided to keep the self-damage part, since the amount of damage you take is pretty negligible with the huge healthpools we'll have at lvl85.

The problem is that not only lock´s hp pool will grow, but also enemys´ hp pools will grow appriorately. If the self-damage will becomes negligible, the spell itself becomes near-to-useless, because there isn´t very big difference between the self-damage and AoE-damage components. Self-damage has lower coefficient, so depending on caster´s SP, the difference can by (positively) bigger with more SP, but still, it would be unfair if demo locks were only spec that has to burn themselves to do solid AoE damage, especially when they were the best survivability build in past...

edit: actually, the self-damage IS negligible, but as i predicted, the non-self damage sucks as well... if you want to do solid AoE damage, you shoud use SoC or RoF, Hellfire is good ONLY if you really need to move without stopping dps

Just a quick question, as I would like to play back my warlock. :)

Does this stack with Immolation Aura from Metamorph?

Coz if it does, then it is doing a massive 889 (566 IA+ 319 HF) damage per second.

Considering both is a 15 secs channeling spell which receive 214% dmg from spellpower,
and if you have 5000 SP at level 85, then

885 + (5000 x 2.14 / 15)
= 1612 dps for 15 secs @ level 85 with 5000 SP.

Just need someone to do a theory craft for clarification. :)

You can take almost no damage from Hellfire by taking advantage of your and talents. Unfortunately, the ability to macro Shadow Ward is broken so you can't tie them together just yet. Hopefully 4.1 takes care of this.
