The control is like a Priest's Mind Control; your point of view shifts to the target machine, and you have a pet bar with their abilities. Your character stands motionless for the duration. Possible backfires are self explanitory.

This trinket comes in handy in Gnomeregan, where a large portion of the mobs there are mechanical.

Note that the enemy mob you control can also attack other enemy mobs - therefore, in tricky situations, not only do you have one less enemy to deal with, you get a temporary ally to fight for you!

You can controll almost any mechanical NPC with this. I controlled the boss in Dead Mine with this, Fel Reavers in Hellfire Peninsula, the elite mobs in the far north-east.

Have fun controlling mobs and running havoc with this sweet trinket, watch out when it backfires though!

ps. The Fel Reavers hit very hard :p

Interesting :) I did try it and after it smooshed me I checked my combat log and it did say 'Fel Reaver is Immune'. I wonder if it's level related? I was level 59 at the time, so it's possible. Will try again at a higher level.

Can be used to control Doomwalker, the 25 man raid boss in Shadowmoon Valley.

Last time I tried it, it worked. Possibly has been nerfed by now, because a small patch has been released since then...

I made one of these and couldn't get the dang thing to work after many trys so I destroyed it, then read about how people were controling all kinds of things and having a blast so I made another and still had no luck and never controlled any mechs (the reavers in westfall) so I destroyed it again. After reading this page I'm thinking of giving it one last try, lets hope for the best.

I can confirm after five tries (and deaths) that the Fel Reaver is now immune to this device. Too bad...

Heres a small list of those which i have tested can / cannot be controled, as of 2.1.3

Fel Reaver (Hellfire) - Immune
Fel Reaver (Near Kazzak) - Immune
Fel Reaver Sentry (Abyssal Shelf - Hellfire) - Immune
Doomwalker (Shadowmoon) - Immune
Tempest-Forge Patroller (Mech) - Immune to Control (not immune to root / threat)
Fel Cannon (Abyssal Shelf - Hellfire) - Not Immune, but only has a weak melee so useless
Fel Cannon MKI (Hellifre) - Not Immune
Toshley Flying Machine ( Blade's Edge) - Not Immune, Horde only i guess, have to fly in land at a spot where you are in range then use before they fire at you

Basically the device can be fun and at lower level usefull but most high level usefull stuff is immune, it also has a resonably high backfire chance.

This is now my favorite trinket.

I can tell you now after some testing that there is almost no mechanical unit in the game, from the Curator to Void Reaver, that is immune to this trinket, at least the mind control aspect of it. The reason that many people get an "immune" message when using it is because it has a chance to instead of MCing the target, root it in place. this causes an immune message for most things, because the fun stuff to mind control, like Fel Reavers, are immune to CC and root spells.

The large robots in Arcatraz (the ones you find half-broken) are not immune to this. Be sure you pull them before using it, however, or you end up controlling a dormant bot, which is no use.
This was VERY useful back when Arcatraz had the double bot pull... not so much now that it has been nerfed.

This is rediculous! I finally get my hands on one of these just to find out that its one of the most useless items for engineers at high levels! Most (if not all) of the useful mechs to control are immune to at least one of the effects this thing causes.

I dont see why Fel Reavers were made immune to it. Surely not everyone would take control of one to send it into the other faction's base in HFP.

What else is useful for a high level engineer? The Goblin Rocket Launcher stuns you for just as long as your target, the Gnomish Poyltriser turns your target into a chicken that can still kick your ass if its a strong opponent. The best thing is the FLying Machine thats still in the works & the goggles, IMO.

Made one at level 10, never worked for me until level 15, now it has like a 85%, at level 18 I hacked Sneed's Shredder first try. But Sneed's Shredder doesn't count as a real boss, hes like a mini boss, the real boss is Sneed, he cannot be mind controlled.

Gnome Defender - 209 can be controlled but its extremly hard since its surrounded by guards, i controlled it and then instantly got killed by guards

Its also really fun to control Toshley Flying Machine, its a bit hard to control them since they fly away when you have controlled them, but when you controll them, they cant fly anymore >.< but they have the 100yd range Rocket Luancher attack that knocks enemys back.

I tested this on Library Guardian, Ancient Sentinel and Stormforged Contruct on herioc mode, and they all "cannot be charmed". But they can be rooted.
I also tried Clockwork Assistant, but he's an "invalid target". Probably because he's friendly.
I'm not aware of anything that this works on in wotlk.

Weak.

This works on the mechanical units in The Geyser Fields in Borean Tundra, but they don't have much use other than novelty.

It seems that this items usefullness has ceased. I would have liked to use it in WG and SoA but it appears tanks are immune. They really should change the tooltip to "Some" Mechanical units, cause it only seems 25% or so can be controlled.

It still has a 3 minute cooldown, equiping it means the loss of whatever trinket you had in the spot before, and the MC is easily interuptable. I don't see why this should'nt work on vehicles and guns

Since the Shattering it is no longer possible to get Flask of Oil from a drop. You're only chance of making this trinket would be if someone has some from before the expansion.

According to the comments on Flask of Oil, Blizzard know about this.

I was going to make this on a low level alt and have fun in Gnomeregan :(.

Be aware post Cataclysm obtaining the Flask of Oil required to make this is now only available on a low (1-3%) salvage rate (does not drop anymore only salvageable by Engineers) and will require some hours of farming.

Unless you have some still in your bank from the days when they dropped a lot in Westfall off the mechanicals there.
