Unless your creepy crate makes any nearby NPC's look around suspiciously with a "!" above their head while the alert sound plays, I wouldn't concider this a proper homage to Solid Snake.

This could be related to Hallow's End. A lot of new stuff has been added for that event since Cataclysm was released.

Edit: The comment below has turned out to be correct. It is indeed the reward at the end of a small questline in Stormwind/Orgrimmar. In the last quest, you're asked to take it to one of two persons. No matter which one you choose, you'll get the pet.

If this is a homage to Metal Gear Solid and Solid Snake, they should use the red exclamation marks they used in the Beta to mark enemies that started quests when slain. Don't know what happened to them, but would be a perfect time to use them again.

Though it could also just be a creepy crate that follows you around.

No mater what choice you pick at the end of the chain.

It also eats critters much like a toad would catch a fly, then green mist comes from the box and it licks its lips.

Also i noticed that when you go near some rat (in my case), a pair of red eyes showed out and then the rat got eaten by the box! Seems there is something inside... and its hungry.

This item is from the quest line, starting in "A freind in need" at the Hallow's end event. It bounces around you as you walk, if you stand still it will start "Break-dancing" by hoping and spining wildly, if you stand still near a critter it will suck it inside and preduce green smoke for a short time. it will also randomly open up and usely a pair of eye will look out at you from the inside of it. A very cool pet that is definetly worth the time it takes to get. :)

Just as amazing, and fast at killing critters as the Toxic Wasteling, but a whole lot more stylish! pulls them in with a blood splat, and licks it's lips.

This is officially the best companion pet in the game.

I just went to try this out. It appears it eats any sheep! I'm guessing it eats other critters as well.

Edit: Further testing shows that it at least eats rats too. I think it's safe to assume all critters are a suitable food supply for this crate.

I just observed my newly adopted pet eat a rat in the Deeprun Tram. I was rather surprised by what happened. Take your buddy down there and get close to a rat, or any other critter for that matter.

Can cofirm these kills work towards Critter Kill Squad. Best place i've found for this is in the train tunnel between IF and SW. Left an alt there whilst doing other stuff with a pop on every now and then to make sure didn't log out and averaged over 400 per hour. Not a fast kill but it all adds up, especially if you have an alt account, as can do whatever you want on your main and still rack up the kills.

He will also eat non-attackable critters, such as the "Dalaran Sewer Turtle" in Dalaran's sewers. He does appear to require line of sight to eat a target, so no luck on the giant sewer rat there.

I LOVE that Creepy Crate eats critters. This makes it deliciously fun for my Worgen rogue (he even has a macro where he targets it and laughs when this happens), but horrific for my Tauren druid (who will never summon this pet again, instead keeping it locked away and carefully guarded somewhere in the Emerald Dream :)

Just visited the little pet shop in Dalaran with this... thing. It found a cat with almost instant respawn (Fuzz) on the right side as you enter, next to the aquarium with the fish in it. Poor cat gets eaten the very second it spawns, every time.
I was hoping for it to eat the swimming gnome too but no such luck, the darn gnome was lvl75 and covered in plate :(

He doesn't just eat critters. I've only been able to try it on vermin like rats and maggots, but every once in a while, instead of eating it, he'll send out a ray of dark energy and disintegrate it into a little puff of darkness.

I got a question for anyone who has both the crate and the Toxic Wastling (since I don't have the later myself or know anyone who does):

The crate's reach seems pretty far to me (as in a few yards instead of touching distance) when it comes to snatching critters. Does the same count for the Toxic Wastling? Or does the crate have the unique benefit of longer reach?

That is actually a good thing to know since I once had a seriously annoying problem with the damn deer keeping half of the nearby camp's NPCs busy, including a questgiver that desperately needed to progress. (I had to painstakingly kit it away from the camp until it reset... darn thing has a horrible short attention span!)

So should that ever happen again, out comes the crate! Thanks for posting this here. :)

This thing doesnt just eat the usual rats and snakes! It eats deer and COWS! I turned my back on it for a moment in Allerian Stronghold, and it ate TWO 105hp Horses that were standing nearby!

Best part about it is all the critters it gobbles end up on your guild's critter kill score!

What I love about it is that if you stay on a critter for a long time he will make this purple stuff and then blood you look at the critter and its dead its the only companion that kills things even if they are only critters =)

I got a great kick out of this. I was farming up some meat in Azshara for cooking and all of a sudden I noticed my Creepy Crate ATE a Azshara Sapling ! I nearly died laughing.

Guess he needed some fiber in his diet after eating all those critters.

These will "eat" any critter in range including everything from a rat, to a sheep, and even a cow! Even Wodin's Warrior Kitten Zena isn't safe around this guy as he will snap her up as soon as she spawns. Take him out to the Crazy Cat Lady's house and watch him clear the place of those pesky cats... and cows... and sheep ...

One of the best places to farm for Critter Kill Squad is in the Ironforge side of the Deeprun Tram. Take out your Creepy Crate and it will eat the the Deeprun Rats. They have about a 1-3 second respawn rate and if you have some down time run WoW in the background and make sure you dont afk out.

IMO I believe that Creepy Crate is a tribute to Creepshow by Stephen King. In 1982 most of you did not exist but this is a great horror classic.

Sadly, not every critter the Crate kills counts towards Critter Kill Squad, at least not at the moment. (I hope this gets fixed.)

I have noticed a pattern:

Whenever the Crate uses Crate Grip to pull the critter to it, it counts.
Whenever it just zaps the critter from afar, it doesn't.

It eats Explosive Decoy also. I summoned one nice decoy inside SW Auction house, few sec later it was gone and one guard has spawned... Horde took it? Nope, it was the box. It enables you PVP after decoy explodes inside.

As I said somewhere else too the best place to get your Creepy Crate for feeding is Terroweb Tunnel in Eastern Plaguelands. Whoever ever went in that tunnel knows that it's FULL of criters: Thousand spiders, scorpions and bugs, they are everywhere. It will clean the place in no time! :P

Has anyone else been ... nudged ... by the Crate?

Twice now when I had another window partially covering WoW, the background jumped a bit, and I brought WoW to the front to find I had been moved ahead by about a yard by no apparent cause, and there was nothing on the combat log... Only the Crate, who was happily feasting on the critters of Terrorweb Tunnel, acting all innocent.

The second time this happened I even heard a sort of wooden sound.

It seems to happen very rarely; I've had the Crate out here for three or four hours and noticed it happening twice.

Anyone else?

He will eat the "Noblegarden Rabbits".Went from a plethora of them running around Falconwing Square to virtually none in a few minutes.For some reason I had a bit of a cackle over that.Great way(ok maybe not, great) to get your "critter kill squad" achieve.

Since patch 5.0.4 (the patch leading into MoP) has launched, they've taken his critter eating abilities away. His "munch" or "chomp" ability is going to be used for the pet battles. Sad, though, Blizz giveth, and Blizz taketh away and put it somewhere else.

A particularly delightful (or gruesome, if you are the squeamish sort) companion - this box full of unnameable horrors skitters after you, and is possessed of a seemingly bottomless hunger for other critters.
Discernible features that pop up while the lid is open for mercifully short moments include a creepy eyeball scanning for targets, a tongue and pair of sinister red eyes.

sad news. as of today 5.1 - the crate still eats everything under the sun :-p but it no longer counts towards Critter Kill Squad. Very annoying and a stealth nerf, also confirmed that lil k.t. no longer counts towards the achievement when he freezes critters.

I have a habit of fishing where lots of critters spawn with my crate out.. and before the patch it counted, afterwards It does not - and i watched the counter very carefully once i realized. no big deal but it was useful.

I think it's a squirrel dk so I named mine squirrel soth. For those who might not know, this game does have a lot of things based off of dungeons and dragons. In dungeons and dragons death knights were made up by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman for their world Dragonlance in the DnD series. The most famous of them being Lord Soth.

I wanted to add as stated by dtylertx, it sadly, no longer counts towards critter kill squad. No longer working on an achievement for the guild while not working on it. I have to actually try to kill them on purpose now. At least it won't be eating my quest critters now. That part was kind of annoying.

This Battle Pet has removed all non-seasonal vermin from my Garrison. In addition, I've been able to reduce Garrison overhead by assigning the Frostwall Axe Thrower to a position at the Bladespire Citadel as a Frostwolf Axethrower, although I do miss the cry of "Varmit!" and subsequent "Thunk!" of an axe hitting a critter.

At first, I wondered why my Creepy Crate (whom I've named Magus in honor of who is in the crate: Magus Medivh) does not seem to want to eat all the Spectral Spinner, Ghost Maggot, and Ghastly Rat infesting the Garrison during the current </>Hallow's End</> world event. After some thought, I decided that he's doesn't eat seasonal food.

Aside from the unique look, I really like this as a battle pet for it's Death Grip. It really throws people off when they try to pull a low health pet back.

Here's a short video showcasing it at level 25 if you want to see it in action before deciding to level it or not.

I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't eat the rats in Zul'Gurub (mount farming...) and then I remembered that you use those rats to toss to the panthers to send them into a blood frenzy.
