Anyone know where this comes from? North is a rare drop from H Vortex Pinacle, East from Glory to the Cataclysm Raider, and west from Tol'Barad rep, I'm curious what this one is from.

This is one of the 4 drake mounts new in cataclysm. These come from:

Given the fact that it shows it drops from 4 versions of Al'Akir, and also given responses of other people, I think we can say it drops from all of the versions of Al'Akir:

My guild downed him Just tonight. The drake dropped. 1% drop rate, and it's a bit darker than the Drake of the North wind which I have, and it's more "electric blue" than It, also. I also believe it's NOT a 100% drop rate off the heroic version of this boss.

It is definitely more vibrant than the Drake of the North Wind, but only slightly. I wish it was more of a difference since I would hope it would be more rare (being from Al'Akir instead of a heroic). Won this today from Al'Akir (regular 10man) and sat next to a Drake of the North Wind and if I wasn't right next to it, I wouldn't notice a difference.

According to the database, it does indeed have a higher drop rate on 25 man to compensate for the reduced chance of winning the roll. Currently, it's listed as a 1% drop rate on 10 man, and 3% on 25 man (though of course, there's quite a low quantity of data for 25 man Al'akir loot, which means this isn't a totally accurate deduction).

I got this mount yesterday and must say it looks pretty good. Varcos, Daggerspine-US. It could be a bit more distinctive in appearance for my tastes, but overall a good looking drake. Dropped on Normal 10man Alakir. Was only our 10th or so kill, so i feel very lucky knowing it is a 1% drop rate. Good luck to everyone trying to get this.

I recently acquired this drake by means I am not proud of, but it was necessary. (please read, do not downgrade!)

I had created a throne of four winds PuG to get the valor I needed to cap for the week. Though I thought I had carefully picked a skilled assortment of heroes, I was shocked at how bad the players were. But it was 2:30 in the morning...who else could I get?

So after about 5 wipes on conclave and 7 on al'akir, we finish the raid. 6 of the raid lie dead after one of the easiest encounters in T11. (Now, Al'akir was difficult before nerfs for PuGs.) I rushed over to the heart of the wind, and was shocked to see Drake of the South Winds staring me in the face. I was shaking, sweating, adrenaline pumping...you know. But now, I would have to roll for it with the biggest group of idiots and jerks (you should have seen the vulgar) for this beautiful mount. Not one person here was skilled or nice.

suddenly it came to me. Al'akir drops a chest, lootable by one person only.

Only I know the drake has dropped.

I began to play it off casually, and rolled for the tier piece and necklace that dropped. After the two items were rolled upon, everyone left the raid almost instantly.

I waited till they were all gone, and then proceeded to loot my favorite mount in the game.

Now please, don't use this tactic with a group of good people. I only did this because these guys were jerks, as I have masterlooted many rare mounts into strangers hands...TWO azure drakes....grr..

That is my story, funny and true. good luck getting this mount everyone.

IMO anyone who helped get the kill deserves a fair shot at the mount.

I would like to see you saying that if you did ICC 25 HC as a leader in a pug, over and over, for like a year, every week, spending time and effort for something that probably won't drop, until it finally drops and someone who was dead the intire fight, wins the mount.

This situation didnt occur to me, but losing something that you took effort and time to make happen, so a noob could win it with dumb luck, itsn't something that I find acceptable...

Spoken like a true ninja! Did yer mom beat you when you were a kid? No? With yer crappy, thieving attitude, I hope she did, and she should start doing it again. Where's yer honor? This is just a game, but thieving is the same, whether it's in a game or IRL You probably steal from other wow players because there is no harsh punishment if you get caught. If you have a derp who dies multiple times then you should kick him. Else, he went and could roll fair and square, unless you set the loot rules earlier being a leader. He still helped you clear something that you would not have done had he not been there.

And I say this as a pug leader, I have seen many people far worse than me who have screwed up multiple times in my runs, and I still give them loot that I might think I "deserve" far over him.

Strangely, when you look at Al'Akir's loot for each difficulty/raid size, this is not shown as loot from 10m Heroic, even though we all know it does.

In the first 7 days of release, I managed to get all the server mounts on BMAH: Mimi's Head for 620k, Onyxian Drake for 512k gold, and Drake of the South Wind for 157k on a high pop pvp server (Bleeding Hollow). Luckily not too many ppl knew where BMAH was located yet. With the low drop rate, I highly suggest buying it if you can afford (157k for a .7% RAID drop rate is crazy low).

Bid fast and keep your mouth shut until AFTER you win. Honestly, this mount is beautiful :)

Some infos:
You can extend a 1/2 Lockout on an alt.
You can enter the Thron of the four Winds when you are Lv80 aslong a Lv85 or higher character enters first.
When you 2man him, the mount drops & you win it, dont forget to loot it! It does not come automatically into the inventory after winning the roll.
Took myself about ~180kills, which "kinda" confirms a low dropchance.

While I get probably many downvotes for this comment, I'd like to ask if anybody obtained this mount from Al Akir since MoP?
After the Galleon/Sha Mount thing, I'm a bit skeptical.

I'm killing him 6times a week since mid october but I havnt seen this mount yet. Ofcourse, this is only a small sample (~110kills) but still.

Would be cool if someone could link a screenshot.

Edit: Received this mount yesterday. So I can destroy my own rumor!

I have a good little story about this mount. This just happened 5 minutes ago.

Earlier tonight me and a DK friend attempted to 2 man the raid in hopes of getting t11 shoulders. I had to log my warrior, 518 ilvl, fury, to kill Conclave before logging my priest to kill Al'Akir. I didn't think Al'Akir was soloable by a dps but it definitely is because when I logged back into my warrior, I was still in the raid, in my own lockout with Al'Akir still up so I figured what the hell, attempted him, wiped, specced second wind and to my surprise, smoked him. I COMPLETELY forgot this mount dropped.

First kill ever, got the mount, the 1h sword that dropped for my DK friend earlier that matches my current tmog, my warrior tier 11 shoulders and the "Four Play" achievement. GG.

Soloed all of Throne of the Four Winds for Reins of the Drake of the South Wind as a 546 BM Hunter with legendary cloak today.

Preparation: I don't think it's doable in anything other than Beast Mastery, I found the Spirit Mend from a spirit beast is required. As long as you constantly use Misdirection to your pet when on Nezir's platform, you also shouldn't get any aggro, as I recommend speccing your pet ferocity instead of tenacity, the DPS is needed. Agility food(Well Fed), Drums of Forgotten Kings, and Runescroll of Fortitude III isn't a must but certainly helps. A core hound pre-cast Ancient Hysteria couldn't hurt either. Glyph of Misdirection and Glyph of Animal Bond are required, and I also specced Thrill of the Hunt for this fight, as when no one is on Rohash's platform, his debuff (Deafening Winds), makes you silenced, preventing you from using Kill Command.

Strategy (Conclave of Wind): Start off by bursting down Anshal, due to the debuff from the other wind lords, your haste is decreased by 500%, and you won't be able to use Kill Command. Use all your CDs, and try to kill him before you run out of focus. Once Anshal is dead, (you should be 90% health or more) run over to Nezir's platform. Getting to his platform means you get your haste back, but you are still silenced. Nezir has a very strange aggro table, I actually had to macro Misdirection into my attacks for him to not attack me. Get out of the Ice Patches ASAP, and stay behind him, as he uses a frontal AoE attack (Permafrost).Use Spirit Mend once Rohash's debuff starts doing a lot of damage. If you get low after that, you can use a Master Healing Potion. Use any CD's you have to finish Nezir, and once he's dead run over to Rohash's platform. Once you get there it's pretty much a kill, however when he casts Hurricane, you can still take 300k fall damage, you can avoid this by using Disengage right before you hit the floor. All you have to do is kill Rohash before Anshal finishes casting Gather Strength, and it should be a kill.

Strategy (Al'Akir): Just avoid Tornadoes (Squall Line) and stand close to him so his Wind Burst don't knock you off, Al'Akir is a ton easier than the conclave of wind, as long as your in 540+ you can pretty much just burn him. It should be noted though that killing Stormling put a 10% increased damage debuff (Feedback) on Al'Akir, and it does stack, so it is useful to either let them build up, then kill them all at once, or kill them one by one as they spawn. Important: When he knocks you back during phase 3 with Wind Burst, you have to resummon your pet.

Just won this at 2:32am, eastern time, on the BMAH. I have seen this go for a 200k+ on my server at the BMAH in the past. However, I won this by way of a unclaimed container, for only 20k! But I will say this, I have bid on a few containers in the past, for around 20k+, and never won ANYTHING of use for my toon.:(

So is bidding on any unclaimed container a virtual crap shoot? YES IT IS! However, I am very happy I actually won something worthwhile finally......especially, when you see how low the drop rate is, when trying to farm it.

Soloed this on my alt Rogue, which is i550 Combat-spec including the Legendary cloak.

I talented Shadow Focus, Combat Readiness, Leeching Poison, and Anticipation. Either Burst of Speed/Shadowstep should do. For glyphs, I went with Feint, Recovery, and Shiv. I would also take the minor glyph Safe Fall. Furthermore, I wrote a quick WeakAura to help me maintain Feint at all times for the first two-thirds of the fight.

You start on Anshal's platform, and you have to burn him down asap. Ambush, then pop Adrenaline Rush+Shadow Blades. Get a Slice n Dice up with your first 5 combo points, then get a Recuperate up with your next 5 combo points. About 4 seconds into the fight, you'll get hit with a debuff that hampers your energy regeneration. Pop Cloak of Shadows+Killing Spree and you should be able to kill Anshal before the debuff comes back. Feint as you're sprinting off his platform toward Nezir.

Nezir has more HP than Anshal and takes a minute to kill. Luckily, you'll get your energy regen back on this platform, but you will still be taking massive AOE damage from Rohash. You need to maintain Feint at all times while fighting Nezir and ideally Recuperate as well. Shiv on cooldown. No seriously. Shiv every 7 seconds. Hit your Evasion, then when that expires pop Combat Readiness. Eventually he will die, but the most important thing here is just maintaining Feint/Recuperate/Shiv.

When you get to Rohash's platform, you won't take any more AOE damage, but he does cast Hurricane at full energy which hits pretty hard. I feinted it, but if you make it this far you should be fine. Don't get hit by the tornados which will knock you off, though.

The final boss, Al'Akir, is essentially a tank and spank once you've made it through this hurdle. I didn't use a Drums of Rage on the Conclave, but if you want I would probably recommend using it on Nezir's platform because you should be killing Anshal in <10 seconds anyway with your initial burst+trinket procs.

EDIT: Some weeks later and my Rogue has slightly better gear (i555), but I would still not describe this solo as a sure thing. I still find that a lot of things can go wrong, especially on Nezir's platform where you have to maintain Feint/Shiv religiously to keep yourself up. Vanish if you need to reset the encounter.

6.0.2 this raid is a joke.

539 ilvl resto gear, but in boomkin spec, first boss might seem hard once you get to Nazir, but oh my, I had about 60+ seconds left on the timer before the first boss would come back to life.

Al'Akir himself is very easy, you DO have to worry about taking too much damage, but my Rejuv in boomkin healed me enough, I did 144k DPS without boomy trinkets and with WAAAAAAY too much spirit for a spec that no longer benefits it.

Tried to solo this as a 553 (Restogeared) Elemental shaman. Had no problem. Nazir took a bit damage, used Shamanistic Rage, popped Fire Elemental totem and hero. Went down in few seconds. Had loads of time left when I killed last boss. Healing with Healing Surge sure helped, and Gift of Naaru (draenei). No problems at all on Al'Akir neither, hero and fire elemental. First try. Happy Farming :)

Just want to say that it's possible to solo both encounters on 25-man. Just did it on my 573ilvl Enhancement Shaman. I thought that it would be as hard as 10-man before 6.0.2, but it's actually easier. ~~I don't know if there's an increased chance in 25 mode~~, but at least it gives more loot to sell at the vendor and it's a bit more challenging for all of us who like to solo old content without steam rolling through bosses.

After checking other comments, it appears that there is a higher chance for the mount to drop on 25 man, so my advice to anyone with 550+ ilvl (maybe even lower) is to clear the raid on 25-mode :)

I was able to solo 25 normal by starting on the North Wind platform-- the others were too difficult due to the -125% haste buff that was applied, couldn't get any casts off in less than 7 seconds. Once the north wind was down, I just went around the circle. Al'akir was no trouble either.

I guess I am one of the lucky few, first time running it with the intent of getting the mount (I had run it maybe once or twice before, but I wasn't there for the mount) , and it dropped.

Keep in mind you can do the first boss on normal and then switch Al'Akir over to heroic.

Was lucky enough to nab it on my *First Try*. Was soloing as a Unholy DK and didn't know the mechanics yet. Hopefully the rest of my mount drops go as swift as this one did!

It does seems the drop rate has been increased since 6.0.2 I see multiple people getting it on their first or second try and I myself first time killing the boss ever I got it on first try... I haven't even unlocked heroic mode yet by the time I got the mount.

Got it after 3 kills on Heroic 25 Tot4W in patch 6.0.3. The spawn rate seems to have gone up because both me and my buddy have gotten it after 3-5 runs. Either that or we just got lucky.

If you down him too quick, there will be a force field around the blue crystal that you loot after you kill him. Don't panic, just fly up high until you are able to go up over the force field and fly back down to get your loot. There are quite a few bosses that get buggy when you kill them to quick.

Easily soloed @ lvl90 and higher. No need to do on higher than 10M normal, but if you're up for a little challenge feel free to up the raid. Just received after 28 runs on both 10/25N.

Edit: First attempt as a Frost DK, solo'd the instance with no problems. Second attempt as a Arcane/Frost Mage, a tad bit more difficult. Was Arcane through the first three boss so I switched to Frost for Al'Akir and was able to defeat him quickly.

Received on my 3rd attempt June 23 while getting my Meta Cata Achievment for "Stay Chill" Achievement. However the character I looted it on doesn't have Artisan Riding so now I have to buy it to learn it. Oh well, Happy Hunting!

Currently at 256 kills, have yet to see this mount drop. A lot of the comments read "Received after 5 kills!" or something like that, but don't get your hopes up :/.....

i kill the council on 25m normal then switch to HC for the slightly higher drop rate. There is no difference on HC except for the increased health pool.

Just wanted to say that casters are definitely able to farm this. 10N had such low HP that as a Shadow Priest, the individual bosses were 1 shottable. Granted, im 698 with the legendary ring but I dont think this amount of gear would have made a difference. If people in SoO gear were doing it in MoP, geared WoD toons should have no problem.

I would definitely say try this on 25M first because once you kill this on 10M in under 60 seconds (the entire raid), you will be kicking yourself about being locked for a week and missing out on the extra 2% rumored chance.

Tried to solo this on 25m hc as a arcane mage today and killed both bosses without problems. The best thing is that the mount dropped xD

It took me 350 Runs to get this beauty, did the raid 11 times each week on my characters. This confirm that this is a very rare drop chance. I did the raid only in 25 man Normal. Item level on my characters was between 660-709.
I used potions,rune and food to make the runs faster, also had healing tonic incase i needed it.
Ironically my cousin did this raid only 3 times when it dropped,still mad on him about it...

One on normal 10 man on rogue, then 25 man hc on druid where it dropped!

Was doing it on 10M heroic 15 weeks then switched to 25M and got the mount. Don't know if chance is greater on 25M but it worked for me.

Got this mount after 32 kills. I think the drop rate is higher if done on 25 man heroic. If you are not geared enough, do the first boss on 25 man normal then switch to heroic for Al'Akir.

Farmed this for ages on 9 toons every week and did a whole 25m heroic cycle for once and got it on the 7th kill ... I had a total of 406 Kills :P

Had finished my 10 runs/hour limit for Vortex to try and get North Wind with no luck. It was late and I was going to call it a night, but decided to just do TOTFW since I was already there and it's a weekly.

Honestly had no expectations going in, just took my time nuking the bosses. Killed Al'akir, looted, stood up to go to bed, saw a golden banner at the bottom of my screen...took 5 seconds to process, checked my bag, and oh my god HOLY SH-- It DROPS on the 3RD try?

RNGesus must have been watching me struggle with the Drake's brother across the way.

I want to provide some helpful information for this instance, but at 100, it really is just walking in and nuking them....oh, for those who have never entered the raid before, Al'Akir's loot is the blue crystal floating in the middle. Kind of like Malygos. You can just fly towards it and loot it. My first time, I flew around like an idiot because I didn't know what I was looking for.

So don't give up and keep trying! I'm grateful to have been spared a long run for this particular Drake, but it'll be back to the Vortex again for me today.

As always I ran into Throne of the Four Winds (Heroic 25 man) and killed the first three winds, before using the wind tunnel to go to the final boss. I find all the bosses are easily defeated with a character of over 600 item level.

On killing the last boss rarity pinged up showing that the mount had dropped (10th week). I screamed a little, it was a good moment although I think my husband went deaf.

Once again (sorry folks) going to praise and preach the Talisman of True Treasure Tracking . Would highly recommend buying one if you dont already have had a mission from your Garrison. Since equiping, I have already had a few drops:
Mimiron's Head
Swift Zulian Panther
and now the Reins of the Drake of the South Wind, perhaps its a coincidence - but what is the harm of trying :) you have nothing to loose! 1 mount a week since equipping, im never taking it off!

Mount farming has been testing at times; thankfully been running 11-16 characters through each week for the past few months. Appreciate the comments here about how long it took to obtain them, as it let me know I wasn't alone.
