I might have to say that this mount beats Ashes of Al'ar in looks, I'm sure many will disagree with me though. That's not to say that Ashes isn't an amazing mount, because it is, but this mount looks awesome and it is also a 310% increase, making it just as practical.

Has about a 1% chance to drop from the new level 80 version of Onyxia, in either the 10 player or the 25 player mode.

It's a 310% flying mount, remodeled version of the usual Drake model to make it look a bit like Ony.

I actually have Ashes of Al'ar on my priest and I have to say I'd rather ride Onyxia. Best looking dragon model in the game, imo. :)

Would be cool if it only dropped on single guild runs (eg all members in raid group are from one guild)

Mind you that would mean I'd never get it - small guild with no great raid achievements under our belts in guild.

My guild got realm 2nd for 10man but I don't think any of the guilds on my server has gotten the mount to drop so far. (Eitrigg) But for it to be a 1% drop there were some prettylucky people out there :D

oh also i couldn't find it written anywhere.. but are they removing the mount at any point? Like will it only drop for a short period of time cause it seems pretty odd for it to be a dropped 310% flying mount o.O not that i mind <3

It'll probably stay for a while, similar to the UP drake, Rivendare's mount, and the ZG mounts, purely because of the ridiculously low drop rate. Also, I'm sure the reason why it's a 310% mount is because it basically looks like the effin Broodmother. And she's one bad b***h.

Posible in some year (if they not remove it) will ppl posible farm Onyxia for the mount, just like some ppl do with Kael'thas for Ashes of Al'ar and other with ZG, Rivendare, Raven Lord.

The drop rate is extremely low. Do not expect for it to drop in one or two tries. Be patient, roll for it and good luck!

Who ever gets this mount will be a one lucky player.

I think there is typo, if the mount is 310% shouldn't there be written "This is an extremely fast mount.", just like at Ashes of Al'ar and Furious Gladiator's Frost Wyrm?

Blizz has made another typo every other 310% speed flying mount besides this one and the the new Violet proto-drake have the tool tip saying:

well, since ur talking about the deathcharger reins, Stratholme has been out far longer that new Onyxias Lair so ofcourse Deathcharger should be more common,, but this is basicly like the drakes from Malygos, just theyr not 310%. so that might be why there isnt a feat of strength for this 1

The ZG mounts (this and this) can be farmed on a shorter timer than this and the mount from Magisters' Terrace can even be farmed daily, so my original post still stands. If this is more rare (or equal to) than Deathcharger's Reins or the other chance mount drops, then it should have a Feat of Strength since most (not all) of the others do.

And how many raids have run Ony on your server, let alone the world already? Yes, it's only been a few days, but just think of the amount of times it's already been done, I would say about 1% of the kills dropped it, but on your server Onyxia may have well been done over 300 times by different people.

(btw, i want a god damn green drake already, blizz. the proto is nice, but kind of freakishly huge.)

If this mount had the signature Neck Fringe or Wingtip Spikes of Lady Onyxia it might ALMOST look similar.

As is; its probably my least favorite 310 mount (visually), And somewhat of a disappointment as a tribute.

Not to say I don't want it. But it could have been skinned much better.

Okay, I'm gonna be honest here. Alot of people have been telling me that they prefer the Ashes of Al'ar and so I've decided to see the diferrence between those two :

Reins of the Onyxian Drake : Pros :

.It's cute,
.Has the looks of Onyxia herself (which everyone likes),
.Will soon have a pet that belongs with her.
.It's 310%
.It has Beautiful horns and wings on her body.
.It's QUITE big.

Now for the Cons :

.Hardly obtainable because it has a 1% chance to drop per 25 and 10 man run (so that's 2% chance to SEE every week, then you have to be lucky enough (or stupid enough) to get a good roll (to ninja it). So the chances are VERY low.
.A lot of people prefer the Phoenix mount to this.
.It's a dragon which probably everyone has, and they're shapes resemble each other.

Ashes of Al'ar : Pros :

.It's a Phoenix! It' Shiny! It Glows! It doesn't land! It leaves traces when u fly!
.It's 310%
.Easier to obtain then the Onyxia Drake because Tempest Keep doesn't require a 10 or 25 man raid we can easily do it with 8 or 5 men or women.
.It has a pet which belongs with it.
.Phoenixes have IRL legends/history.
.It's Almost Immortal :D

Now for the Cons :

.When you zoom into it you can see it's ugly face (try it).
.It's not as amazing as HAVING the Onyxia Drake.
.It's small.

After doing the difference between the two, I still can't choose which one is better but I guess that since Onyxia drops good items (and so I'll be farming him) I'll go for the Beautiful Drake. And for whoever is reading I guess it's up to you to choose :D!

In my opinion, this is the best mount in the game thus far. It dropped for our guild (Sufferance) on Uldaman US. I think I was first on the server to get it - AMAZING mount!

Everyone in the raid gets the achievement for defeating yogg with no npc assistance, this has absolutly nothing to do with the mount. The mount is looted after the achievement is earned.

Notice how I said "an achievement associated with it", and if you have the Mimiron's Head Mount then you MUST have the achievement, so it has everything to do with the mount.

In the same way if you have the Onyxia mount, you MUST have the Onyxia raid achievement.

The Onyxia (10 and 25) do not guarentte a drop of the Ony mount though. The "Alone In The Darkness" Achievement means a 100% certain chance drop. Big difference there.

As possibly one of the luckiest rollers in the History of WoW, I have both Ashes of Al'ar and the Onyxian Drake. I prefer the Drake because I dont constantly have people badgering me about where in the world I got that Phoenix...and I still get the 310% flight speed. That and you have to admit, it is seriously BADASS to see a gnome riding Onyxia.

I got this baby on my first Ony raid.. 310% speed. Body is just like any other drake, this one has details which makes it look like Onyxia. It drops on 10 man too.

Weird how all the screenshots so far only have alliance players in them, and in reply to Elfhippie, i'm assuming alot of the downrating is because nobody likes a showoff, showoff posts belong on thottbot, not here, either that or people just like downrating.

I rolled like 100 and I'm now the coolest guy on my server" Instead of comments like that, how about posting something more insightful or at least just a bit comically? Let's start it off like this;

The mount is rare. The mount has some unique stuff on it, like the spikes on it's tail and head. It drops off Onyxia 10/25 lvl 80. It says "this is a very fast mount" But it's 310%. You sure get a lot of attention from having this mount. People will offer you a huge amount of gold for it. Obtaining + learning won't give you any achievement.
That's about what I can tell you, now good luck with your mount hunt!

Edit: 3 years and 6 months later and I finally got mine. I wish you all the best of luck in your hunt.

Its a really cool looking mount. Drops from onyxia 10 and 25 man.

I got it last night, i was really lucky, since the raid leader had forgotten to put master looter on. Everyone needed and i won the roll with a 61roll.

I felt i really deserved it, since last week some raid leader ninjad the mount from voa25, i even won the raid roll he did.

Anyway expect to get alot of attension if you are riding this one, many ppl just say: stay still so i can get a screenshot. Its a awsome looking mount.

Actually, I pugged 10 VoA and won the black war mammoth my first time I ever saw it drop. I also pugged the 10 man onyxia raid and the first time i saw the mount drop I won that too lol. and I pugged the 5 man H utgarde pinacle and won the blue proto drake first time i saw it drop. I've been extremely lucky but never had issues w/ ninjas! Crazy thing is i won all 3 of these mounts within a 2 week span of eachother.

Uhm, no the ashes of Al'ar is not that cool at all. I'd say the Onyxian drake and the PvP Frost worm are hands down the best looking mounts in the game, and then proto drakes after that.

I just got this, but I think that either the tooltip or the mount speed is bugged. It says "very fast" yet the buff shows 310% speed increase. However when flying next to DK or Paladin with 280% mount and 20% speed buff, you will fall behind with this.

Also I find it weird that they didn't add feat of strenght achievement for this :(

EDIT: I tested this out and had a damn long conversation with GM who was also observing. Here's the results:
The mount is 310%, working as intended.
HOWEVER
Paladins http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=26023 and http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=32223 stack for some reason, givin 280% mount a total speed of 315% - altho they shouldn't stack and only apply 20% speed buff, giving a total of 300%. The GM noticed this too and I think it will get fixed in later patch. Same goes for DK's with http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=50392 and http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=51267

EDIT2: Seems like many paladins and DK's are reading this since I'm getting downrated because of finding this :D

To the poster before the one directly above me, you're just not taking in the base 100% run speed. Mounts increase speed by X%, not replace it. a 310% mount is a 310% bonus to the 100% base speed

Dropped in my 10 man guild run last night. I won the roll. A friend of mine needed one more mount for his 100 mount achievement. I passed it to him. Everyone was shocked but I don't care, I've never been into vanity mounts.

got it after doing ony 36 times it dropped from 10man version took me awhile was focusing on ashes more than this but luck rolled it dice:P
i rolled 12 on this awsome mount but the was another winner so i paid him 20k gold to pass it to me and he accepted i couldnt belive it i know it worth more than that be that person looks like hes poor guy:P

That's not how you calculate that, you need to turn the percentages into actual numbers rather than what they really are, which are fractions.

1.00 + 3.10 = 4.10

1.00 + 2.80 = 3.80

The only reason I point this out is for Speed increases based on percentage such as Crusader Aura or On A Pale Horse.

Crusader Aura example

(4.10 x .20) + 4.10 = 4.92 or 492% of base speed

(3.80 x .20) + 3.80 = 4.56 or 456% of base speed

That means a 310% mount has, when buffed by Crusader Aura, 36% of the base speed of the rider added as compared to a regular epic flyer.

Just saying, present the maths right otherwise you like a fourth grader. The only reason we always call it in percentages is because we have no idea what value to assign to base movement speed so we generally just give it a one and be done with it. If somebody wanted to work out base movement value, walk on a non-speedbuffed character and then run and assign the walking speed a value of one and the run speed an appropriate multiplier of that value.

Rant over) I have run Onyxia 10 AND 25 every week on the week, since late October 2009 and have never seen it. I would imagine it is on a seperate loot table and not part of her set loot. I will update if I ever see one, or win one.

This mount is 310% Speed and drops off of the 10/25 modes. Even tho it says "This is a very fast mount: (for the 280% flight) it is still 310. I believe this mount is very rare, as sitting on the dalaran I have never seen one. GL getting yours... time to kill ony 10.

While mounts add a flat number (280% mount makes you move at 380% speed, 310% mount makes you move at 410% speed) to the 100% run speed, Crusader Aura and mount movement speed increase talents add a percentage of total max accumulated movement.

Base max speed without snares or skills/talents at full run is 100%. Walking is 36% of base max.

Ground mounts

Normal: 100 + Mount 60 = 160%
Epic: 100 + Mount 100 = 200%

With Crusader Aura

100 + 60 = 160 | 160 + (160 * .2) = 192% speed
100 + 100 = 200 | 200 + (200 * .2) = 240% speed

Flying Mounts

Normal: 100 + 150 = 250% speed
Epic: 100 + 280 = 380% speed
Extremely Fast: 100 + 310 = 410% speed

With Crusader Aura

100 + 150 = 250 | 250 + (250 * .2) = 300% speed
100 + 280 = 380 | 380 + (380 * .2) = 456% speed
100 + 310 = 410 | 410 + (410 * .2) = 492% speed

Crusader Aura adds these rates as a flat amount of increase when the numbers are pulled apart.

Normal Ground: 32%
Epic Ground: 40%
Normal Flight: 50%
Epic Flight: 76%
Fast Epic Flight: 82%

I'm not sure if this is what was described, as the remark about 36% added to base speed for 310 mounts threw me off completely.

If you are unsure of these numbers, get any mod that takes the speed information directly from the game and doesn't do it's own calculations. SpeedFu used to do this and might still. I believe Carbonite may do it now, as well.

Hope this is helpful to those that are trying to figure out mount speeds and the increases :p If you have talents that increase the speed, just change the calculation to suit the increase your talent gives you. Such as 10% from talents for mounted or movement speed increase, just replace the .2 with a .1. Aspect of the Cheetah/Pack look like they are adding a flat 30% because it is based off of your run speed, which is considered 100% by the game client and server.

Edit: Nevermind, I see what you meant by the 36% increase. Extremely Fast are 36 above normal Epics. :p But anyways, yay math! For the longest time I thought I was one of the only people around that understood the speed increases. People tend to say "Uhh.. no man, you're WAY off, that's too fast. L2P" when I start spouting out the real movement numbers.

You and Grimlorn and made two mistakes (and Lampanator made on of them). Everything you wrote looks fine to me, but you put the flying speed of the mount together with the 100% base speed of the character, but a character can't fly on his own, so his flight speed is 0%. With % of flying speed they take the 100% as the land speed of a character, but it doesn't count up while flying. Also, Crusader Aura and On a Pale Horse increase mounted speed (Heart of the Crusader & ), so the *20% counts for the total speed, and not for the speed of the mount (although the flying mount speed is, as I pointed out, the total).

Edit: I've done some sums and it seems they do add up basic runspeed with flying mounts, because otherwise this would mean you go 10% slower on basic flying than on basic ground riding. My bad.

Since what ever date they reset the loot table wowhead is showing 1266 10m kills (as of 3/23/11) with no drops and 276 25m kills with 1 drop

I use my standart tanking gear. Was almost full epic 359 on my first kill, but it can probably already be done a bit lower.
Specc is my normal tanking spec (0/31/10) focused on Seal of Insight and Word of Glory. It lacks Hallowed Ground, which I would recommend if you are struggling with the whelps, but it wasn't necessary for me, so I didn't bother respeccing.
Phase 1 and 3 are just tank & spank. Onyxia deals so pathetic damage herself, I don't even need all my Holy Power for selfhealing. Just don't get kicked or feared into the whelpcaves and everything should go very smooth.
When phase 2 starts, make sure to have most of your cooldowns ready, because the fist wave of whelps is quite huge and doesn't die that fast because of AoE-damage caps. After that you don't need to save your cooldowns anymore, but should just use them regullarly. Glyph of Holy Wrath is great against whelps during the whole phase. The guards, that spawn from time to time should be your main targets during phase two, while whelps mostly die from your cleave damage with Hammer of the Righteous after the first wave is down. As long as one guard goes down about the same time, when the next one reaches you, your normal selfhealing from Seal of Insight and Word of Glory should be enough to keep you alive. I usually don't even move out of Onyxia's Deep Breath or the guard's Fire Nova thing and it is still fine. Damage to Onyxia can only be dealt with Avenger's Shield and Judgement, which should of course always be used when she is in range unless you are just beeing overwhelmed by adds. I simply Focus Onyxia and use focus macros for these two spells, but I also use Judgement and Avenger's Shield against the adds when necessary or when Onyxia isn't in range. I usually just stand in the back of the cave and wait for her to move in range rather than running after her and only deal with the adds in the meantime.
Once she enters phase 3, kill any remaing adds and enjoy another tank & spank phase.
My kills take around 45 minutes, because phase 2 lasts quite long. Luckily she doesn't have any berserk timer.
I hope this helps and apollogize for my bad English.
And don't forget to take at least one additional shield with you, you will need it.

Got this last week (30th April 2011) on 10 man- 3 manned weekly (I use a survival hunter aoe spec for the whelps, and drag a tank and healer just to make it quick). Really, really faceroll now, I'm sure many will be soloing this towards the end of Cataclysm. Good luck to the mount hunters out there!

-Does drop in either 10/25 man
-Drop rate is extremely low
-Mount can be traded for 2 hours after looting to anyone in raid group.

Update:
I can now confirm that you can loot this from Unclaimed Black Market Container, even if you already have the mount.
Also, Onyxia is now soloable as most classes and specs.

This mount has possibly the lowest drop rate of all mounts. The Baron's Deathcharger mount is farmable of more than 100 runs a week, but this mount can only be run once a week. If you were farming this mount on 10 and 25 man before they made it just one, and you never got it to drop, then you know how rare it is.

I have been running Onyxia since they made it a Wrath dungeon. Back then, i ran it 10 and 25 on two characters, every week, every month.
In cataclysm, i have run 10 man every week on one character. I have killed onyxia at least 100 times (not an exaggeration) and i have never seen it drop once.

I love it very much, and i cherish it, but i have never seen it drop. I run the onyxia raid with full intentions of paying over 20k for it if it were to drop (i am not a ninja, not even for this mount).

Unfortunately, i have never been able to fullfill that promise, as it has never dropped.

:(

EDIT: Confirmed, this mount has the lowest drop rate of any in the game. At a dismal 0.2% drop rate, this mount is THE rarest mount in the game. Personally run this every week, and have since it became a level 80 instance, still no drops. Currently 79 kills.

If this mount drops, and you are NOT the leader, chances of watching it get ninja'd are 99%.

EDIT: October 17, 2012. Finally got this mount. Soloed my 132nd kill. About time.

Affliction warlock can do it as long as you keep your corruption DoT on ony and you keep the healing up. The guards in P2 are a joke, and you can heal through Onyxia's attacks if you have good gear. Using a voidwalker is a good choice because of aggro management and the sheild.

Affliction warlock can do it as long as regen stays up. This is actually a relatively quick solo because you do a lot of damage to ony during P2 (which takes the longest). Use voidy for sheild and whelp aggro, and make sure he stays alive via health funnel and such.

Won this on my 19th run, i was not expecting it to drop!

Anyways, I 2 manned her every week with me as a Hunter, and a Holy pally, we would make my pet tank the whelps, and when the big adds came out, i would switch to him, down it, and switch back to ony, making it a 5-6 minute fight.

This mount gets as much (Or more) attention than Al'ar! Dont stop farming her! The mount is Worth it!

Being a hardcore mount collector, and having a multitude of rare and retired mounts, this one still eludes me after three years. Even though I took a 6-8 month break from World of Warcraft, before then I still had about 80 Onyxia kills under my belt, and no drake to show for it.

As of right now, I have killed Onyxia 161 times (across multiple toons) without seeing a mount drop a single, solitary time. It's my understanding that some people have this mount drop after one run, 10, 20, any less than what I've done. This can be a bit wearing on your mind after pulling teeth over 100 times just to see it drop once.

By now, I see Onyxian Drakes crawling all over the place. If I ask people how long it took them, they always say they didn't have to work very hard. Some of them claim they didn't even know Onyxia dropped a mount. Really?

If you begin farming for this, don't expect it to drop, at least not right away. It only will if you're lucky, and if it does drop for you, you are very, very lucky, and might not know how much. I'm not going to give up; I'm very hard-headed, unfortunately, but be sure that you really, really, really, REALLY want this drake. I find it difficult to express how tired I am of killing Onyxia, and even considered suggesting to Blizzard that they increase the drop rate. I decided against it, realizing it likely wouldn't change anything. Let's just say that me "going insane" over this thing never dropping is an understatement (a weird series of dreams occurring where the reins dropped, and I woke up feeling dismayed).

The drop rate is either 1 in 300 or 1 in 500. Some sources say 0.3% and others 0.2%, and I honestly don't know which is true, but I'm willing to bet it's 1 in 500. The World of Warcraft armory states the drop rate as being "Extremely Low," which is what it also says for the Fiery Warhorse on the armory. Most raid-dropped mounts are "Low" to "Very Low," not including Experiment 12-B, which is also "Extremely Low." Personally, I think they should change it to "Really Lucky People Only."

The armory now states that Onyxian Drake drop rate is "Very Low," instead of "Extremely Low." It's highly possible that they increased the drop rate to 1 in 100.

The Onyxian Drake is now on the list of mounts that will be occasionally available on the Black Market Auction House in Mists of Pandaria. My realm isn't highly populated, so it usually goes for about 350k.

At this point, I can solo Onyxia on various characters. Most classes can solo her now, in addition to the ones that already could pre-Mists, including mages, priests, druids, rogues and hunters.

UPDATE: After three years of farming, it finally dropped on my 162nd kill. To say that I "overreacted" when seeing it drop would be an understatement.

After ~60 kills, FINALLY dropped for me. In the same day, I went to EoE, and the BLUE drake dropped. I guess life is bitter sweet. However, I am happy the grind is over. Now just to get the karazhan horse to drop, ashes to drop, and the azure drake. I 3 manned this every week and it did indeed drop on 10 man.

Just started solo Onyxia10 1month ago on my MM hunter with a Turtle pet.
Seem easy maybe due to the easy access to better gear and whole fight take me around 7 to 8 min depending. Was only expect to be another disappointed week until i see the Mount drop. This mount is really an attention seeker and to all mount lover and farmer out there, don't give up, luck will be on your side. Currently still soloing VOA and TK for the other 2 rare mounts but i already got Azure drake from EOE less than 2 tries.

I remember when onyxia 80 was released, i think it was 2nd or 3rd week and it dropped for our guild. Raidleader did /rw about how much he deserves it for all the "hard work" he did for the guild, and then he just took it. We lost 6 people that night haha. Funny thing is that the raidleader did least of the officer work, he just happened to do the raidinvites that night.

Most beautiful mount in the game. I would swap all of my rare mounts just for this but I think Blizzard are onto me (if i got this basically objective complete) :P. ANYYYYWAY...for hunters looking to solo this the solution is at hand :'D

To start with you are going to want an extreme soloing spec (check out hunter guides on google). SV is pretty good dps wise but I've found the best for this is MM with glyphs of mending pet and also misdirection. Make sure that in your spec you do have beast mending. The trash is fairly simple if you are able to keep aggro on your pet.

Now once you get to onyxia, you want to make sure you have all buffs possible e.g. food buff, drum of kings, etc. Phase 1 set md on your pet and start you're rotation. Once aggro is on your pet move your pet to the very back of the room (do not just put your pet on passive and run there, select 'move to') with onxyia facing the wall and be sure not to get near the tail at all as you dont want to end up surrounded by whelps just yet. Burn her health down to 65%.

This starts Phase 2 in which you want to put your pet on passive so it runs to the wall (see told you selecting 'move to' was useful). Follow onxyia until you reach a the ridge in the floor about 2/3s of the way down the room. Keep dpsing her as the spawned whelpings draw nearer. Once they reach you feign death until they go back into the whelp areas. At this point i like to use all cds such as rapid fire and trinkets, as being mm i can reset them when i need it. This usually gets onyxia to around 45% ish. Another thing to keep in mind is to check on the big adds that spawn from the entrance. To reset these just feign death. You're pet at this point should be passive against the wall and the whelps coming back to you. Again feign death and they will target your pet (at which point change pet to aggressive). You need to keep md up and get this pack of whelps down as fast as, whilst still keeping an eye on the big adds. After this pack is down it usually gets easier. Focus all you have on onxyia, feigning each time big adds come out, until shes at 39% which starts phase 3.

The hard bits over so Phase 3 basically goes back to phase 1 of just dpsing her down and keeping aggro off you. If you haven't got her down fast enough to this stage, another pack of whelps will spawn so just do the same as in phase 2 and get them down as fast as possible. Occasionally she will do bellowing roar which will barely cause any damage if any so just md as per usual until she finally hits 0 :P You've done it! Congratulations :) Hopefully when you open that shiny loot bag (bag? erm not quite sure where onxyia stores all her loot tbh) there will be a glistening purple epic mount there :D

I hope this complete and utter babble is decipherable to someone and helps in some way :D Super good luck to you all in getting this...its time to get serious and go kick some purple drake butt...

Now with the Black Market Auction House in MOP it looks like we'll be able to bid on the Onyxian Drake on the rare occasion it shows up. With biding starting around the 10k- 20k mark with no buyout; be prepared to pay a pretty penny for her when she appears on the AH.
For those of us who are well over the one to two hundred Onyxian kills and have yet to see the mount drop- this news alone presents a much needed glimmer of hope in ever obtaining this mount sooner rather than later. My advice to players continuing their efforts in obtaining this mount in MOP; would be to save your gold. And remember to do your dailies and gathering professions to make some extra coinage in the meantime. Who knows? If you happen to get her to drop in a weekly run, you might need it to obtain gear in MOP for pve or pvp.

This is the last mount in my list (well over 150+ runs of TK on 4 toons and ashes finally dropped today).

Needless to say, I have been solo farming 10-man Onyxia for a long time now, on 4 toons every week with over 100+ kills so far and no mount.

I use 3 blood DKs and 1 ret pally. Ret pally and blood DK with good gear can down her real quick, but she is still doable with 378 blood DK, but it takes really long time in phase 2. With 5.0.4, DK gets a new ranged ability, Death Siphon, make sure to take this talent and save your death runes for her instead of adds.

Hopefully I can nag this mount soon and I'll be graduating from solo farming mounts, until MoP of course!

In the first 7 days of release, I managed to get all the server mounts on BMAH: Mimi's Head for 620k, Onyxian Drake for 512k gold, and Drake of the South Wind for 157k on a high pop pvp server (Bleeding Hollow). Luckily not too many ppl knew where BMAH was located yet.

If you're on a high pop server, expect it to be a race to 999k cap to win. Have a toon prepped and hope you're the lucky one to get that last bid in. Bid fast and keep your mouth shut until AFTER you win. Honestly, this mount is beautiful and can't believe after the years of farming that I actually own it. GL! :)

This mount has now become available for all players as long as they have quite a bit of gold.
This is now an item that you are able to buy on the Black Market Auction House in The Veiled Star next to the Tavern in the Mists, in Pandaria.
It is not always up of course, but it is one of the items which are sold there.
Starting bid for this mount is 50k gold.

Onyxia is soloable as an undergeared 89 enhance shaman.

Although this may elicit a "so what" response, my point is that she should be soloable by most, if not all, classes when decently geared at level 90.

Solo'd today on my first try MoP attempt. Gear level was 420ish. Phase 2 was the trickiest part because it took time to effectively deal with the adds (i.e., time for me to LEARN how to deal with the adds) and damage Onyxia until entering Phase 2. Some type of ranged attack is a must, and I don't mean the Air Rider BB gun from a few Winter Veils ago. Once I was able to down a wave before the next one arrived, leaving a little time to damage Onyxia, I managed to knock her down. Some type of self-healing is a must.

Good luck fellow mount hunters! Despite the horrid drop rate, with account-wide mounts available we should start seeing a lot more of these in Org or IF/SW (wherever alliance hang out).......just hopefully not before I get mine (j/k).

For soloing melee chars without a somewhat decent, spammable ranged ability, note that AoE still hits Onyxia in the air phase when you are below her, such as Thrash and for feral/guardian druids, Fan of Knives and Crimson Tempest for rogues (Swipe and FoK do reward CPs if you have Onyxia targetted and no CPs on other targets)

Just go some information on this mount from a GM. I recently got this mount on the release date of 5.1. According to the wow website this mount has changed from an extremely low drop to a very low drop. To put this in perspective Ashes of Alar, Raven Lord etc are very low drop chances. So why in 5.1 was this changed to very low from extremely low, according to a GM they are NOT allowed to release any information outside of the patch notes, but then went into talking about how it would be very unlikely for a change like that to occur. From my extensive research this used to be a .25% drop chance but the website wasn't updated for it, and remained to say extremely low even after this mount in cataclysm was buffed to a 1% drop chance. All in all the mount has a 1% chance to drop and is just like all other rare mounts listed and is now correctly listed as a very low drop. Looks like they are moving away from super rare mounts such as Deathchargers 1/25000 chance in vanilla to all a 1% drop.

Very low drop : 1%
Extremely low drop: >1%

just soloed 25 men with ilvl 468 blood DK, it took like 30-40 mins. with 22+ million HP, the flying phase is the most annoying. i pretty much use Blood Boil to deal damage and spread diseases to the boss for the whole flying phase fight. once it drops down to like 30% hp, the fight becomes so much easier as it gets down to the ground.
i have soloed 10 men for like 30+ times, no drop so i decided to try 25 men this time, still no drop. If 10 men also drop the mount then i seriously wont solo 25 men again. It was really an annoying fight.
i also would like to know how people solo 25 men with warriors or rogues.

I just got this baby last saturday after many many runs with my lvl 90 fury warrior in ilvl490 gear.
After the 5.1 nerf it's very easy to dps her down even if your class has no range ability spell

My other post was long and I would just like to sum up what it said...
1.Onyxian Drake use to be a very low drop chance >1% (.3% about)
2.Was buffed to a low drop chance or 1% in either cata or MOP just like other very low mount chances such as Barron Rivendaer Charger(was 1/25000, now 1%)
3. We are all 90 now and people are soloing this like mad, and because of it 1% alot of us are getting lucky on this amazing drake :)

One thing I would like to point out is that there is alot of posts regarding drops post 5.1, but check ashes of alar or any other mount they all have many comments regarding drops happening withing this patch.

An influx of these have been dropping for people lately, including my own. It's something I farm every week on several alts and was roughly on my 200th kill when I got it.

Appears to have been raised from its originally thought 0.3-0.4% chance to 1% or slightly higher. Which is still quite rare but looks to be 3 times more likely to drop now than it used to. With it being soloable, anyone with a few alts can now set it as a very realistic short term achievement to obtain one.

OMG! I ran like countless times with the DK, it never dropped. I just ran it with my lvl89 Warlock for the first time, and it dropped! i died like 3 times as an Afflix lock. I couldnt handle too many little drakes. i was about give up and come back later when i turn 90. but then i gave Demo spec a shot. ta-da! so glad i didnt give up.

Seems Blizzard may have greatly increased the drop rate for this mount now. (dec 2012)

A friend got it on his first try on Monday and two of his friends also got it earlier this week. It didn't drop for me on Tuesday when we tried (so not 100%), but it did drop today.

First time soloed Onyxias Lair last night on Silver Hand server. Nightdeadly, went blood spec 90 dk. onyxian drake dropped for me. One f the most beautiful drakes I've ever seen. In fact, I've never seen that drake ever before mine. I was very lucky.

@Ashleyy: your posts are interesting, and valid, could really be that due to all the people soloing this at 90 there are now many posts of people getting this mount, but you keep saying the drop rate hasn't been increased. I am now at 138 runs, all my runs were done in cata, so definitely a drop rate 1% could be reasonable, BUT look at the drop rate stated here on wowhead: 0,64%; a few days ago it was 0,48%, a few days before was 0,45%, a few weeks earlier was around 0,33%. Really, something has changed, I believe 90% that the drop rate has been increased to 1% WITH 5.1, and that before that it was still like 0,3-0,4%; way too many people got it in 5.1. Have you checked which mounts people keep in towns now? Before 5.1 there were like 2 people in a realm with it, now you can see onyxia mounts anywhere, they're becoming the new ashes of al'ar.

Proof the mount drop rate was increased to be in line with the rest.

I'm never this lucky, so something must have changed, I just downed (solo) Onyxia as 90 (obviously) Frost Mage and this dropped on my first ever solo run. I don't know if this makes a difference but at the same time I got the She Deep Breaths More and the More Dots! achievements at the same time. Surely the drop chance must have been massively increased if I got this on my first run.

I finally got this mount tonight after farming it almost every week for the last year. If it is a 1% drop rate as many of you have speculated, I beat the odds with it dropping after 48 runs. I seriously doubt that it has increased more than that. I have many friends that also farm this mount weekly and they haven't seen it drop yet. The increase in drop reports on Wowhead and other wow related forum posts however do seem to indicate that the drop rate has increased to ~1% so if you haven't got it yet, keep trying!

Hey guys! So, I've always loved this mount, always thought it looked really cool, but before 5.1, I always thought "meh, it's way too rare, I'll never get it" so I never even tried to obtain it, so with 5.1, I see an increase on drop rates on mounts, last week I got Rivendare's Deathcharger, Raven Lord and the Blue Drake:) So I thought "Okay, maybe this thing MIGHT actually drop!"
So I got 3 of my level 90 alts and start to run the place, on the first week, nothing:(, On the second week, nothing:(, On the third week, I do my Paladin and Monk and nothing:(
Then I forget about it for a while, and go about doing some archaeology, which brings me to Dustwallow Marsh, and I see that dreaded "Onyxia's Lair" and I think "Should I do it?" I'm about to turn round and continue doing archaeology and something in the back of my head says "Go for it" So I go in on my hunter, who isn't very good at all, and I die, and I'm like "Grrrr, I knew I shouldn't have done this," So I go back in with my game face, kill her after like 10 minutes and then just before the loot page opens I look up and say "Please!" I open the loot page and low and behold, "Reins of the Onyxian Drake" and I freak out and start jumping around. I thought that I'd just like to share my story to keep the spirits up of all those who have had to do it too many times. Good luck everyone! Happy New Year:)

I think all these "Got this in 20 runs" posts have more to do with more farming it regularly, because of not needing a raid in 5.1 than the rate being increased. Also, those who don't get it tend not to post, so there's some bias in reading posts.

Edit: I just got this in approx. 12 runs, though I do run just about every raid and dungeon with a rare drop, which ups the overall likelyhood of seeing something. Not sure if there is funny business with the Onyxian Drake or not....

Mmm, after 168 runs across 11 chars and not having seen it drop, and seeing that the drop rate got raised from 0,3% or so till 0,64% now on wowhead, I noticed it's not raising any more, and no posts of anyone getting it since 7 days. Anyone can confirm it's still dropping, and anyone knows why the drop rate would instantly stop raising? That they made it around 0,66% maybe now?

Combined with not needing a raid to enter raids now, along with how easily Onyxia is to solo at 90, the Onyxian drake is at about the same status level as Ashes of Alar on my server (everyone and their mom has one)

180 runs, no luck, 12 chars to farm with now, and increasing by 1 each week, but I noticed a few more people got it and the drop rate raised again, from 0,64% to 0,70%, so now it should raise slower and slower without ever reaching 1% (will stop to 0,99%) if it's actually been buffed to 1% as of 5.1, which could be true from the data I see.

I figured i would get around to adding my Onyxia solo kills spread across my horde and alliance toons and totaled 261 without seeing the mount drop. Seeing gold farmers buy this from BMAH and show it off is a worse feeling to me then being kicked in the unmentionables.

Completely forgot to add my pally kills. Back when word of glory was considered OP, I knocked out a few on the pally. Then blizz nerfed it because pallys wouldn't die in BGs. So, with this week and pally kills I'm at 292 and no mount. Good luck to the rest of you, but me first plz. I think I have senority.

I have been farming this mount as well as Ashes of Alar weekly on my main since about the end of Wrath with the help from a friend. I started being able to solo it as a BM hunter in MoP. I leveled 2 more hunters to help farm mounts, for 3 chances a week. This mount dropped for me today on my crappy alt hunter on 10m her first time doing it. But after 92 runs all together for myself. I never thought I would get it.

The drake seems to have it's own "club". Other Ony drake riders will talk to you, and emote you. Saying "Welcome to the elite club for people who never have to change thier mount macro again, ever.!"

Since this is now easily solo'd by lvl 90's you will see more of these mounts. The drop rate has not increased. Now to get Ashes of Alar to drop. sighh...

Hello.

Would be nice if wowhead would update their database in such a way, that you could get to show droprates based on certain criteria - like :
- patch number - this would be very beneficial to get the proper / actual dropchance for the Reins of the Onyxian Drake
- date-range
- server
- player (this of course needs to be anonymised such, that only contributers willing to provide their player details are listed)
- profession(s) of the looter (here allowing to show recipes e.g. that only drop for characters with a specific profession)
- other things that i am unable to come up with (like some sql-query to allow varying criteria to become very specific

As a side note to the wowhead team - implement an achievement search functionality such that you can see which characters have gained what achievement - and also which people have achieved a certain achievement on a specific server.

Have posted a similar on the Blingtron 4000 Gift package page - please upvote so that hopefully the wowhead team will see this.

A bit of advice for warriors - while Ony is out of range of direct melee attacks during he aerial phase, she is low eneough to be hit by AoE while she is shooting off fireballs.

If you sit underneath her, pop your cooldowns and unleash baldestorm you should be able to get her back on the ground in prettty short order. Whirlwind also works and I'd imagine that thunderclap would too, although I haven't tried it.

Started farming for this at the beginning of November, and have just gotten it today :) Very pleased with the pretty little gal, and it still seems to be rare enough that I've only seen one other person in game with it on my realm.

She should be easily soloable by pretty much any class once they are above level 85.

26. January 2013; Met a player in-game, and he could provide me the following story:

After 4 Onyxia kills, FOUR kills, he had gotten 2, TWO Onyxian Drakes! Both of them with just 2 weeks inbetween. As I repeatedly told him what a lucky bast*rd he was, he told me that his friend, as we were speaking, ALSO had gotten an Onyxian Drake.

He thought that it was some sort of a bug, and I dont know what to believe, but strange activities are certainly going on...

Its not a really easy fight majority of the time.Disc priest wise just smite spam, then pop your mindsear for the adds and keep attacking her when your adds die!. and also bring pots.LOTS AND LOTS OF POTS!.

Feel free to downrate again, just want to point out that the drop rate raised again, yesterday it was 0,70% drop rate, now 0,84%, so there was an update again! It's going to raise till almost 1% IMO (cause it has been 0,25% in wrath). Aside from that, 207 runs, nothing, will be for later hopefully.

Cracked 302 runs today through alts... 2 more alts left this week. I remember the flight from Darnassus and then ground mount to Onyxia's cave taking just as long as the fight itself (provided no wipes and no one being feared into the whelp eggs). Yeah still crushes me to see players who have no clue what ony was like back then to flaunt it saying it was easy. Insert fussy britches comment here.

It would appear the drop rate has been buffed in patch 5.1!

If anyone else has noticed, this was, at different points in time, shown as a 0.3% drop chance. It was buffed to 0.5% then 0.7% (apparently) in Cataclysm, and now since 5.1 it is showing as 0.8% so far on the wowhead database but it'll take some more time to become more accurate. I suspect it's roughly a 1% drop chance now, on par with the Ashes of A'lar and Mimi's Head / Invincible.
While it's true there have been no blue posts about this, there rarely is unless it's a significant change reguarding mounts (such as invincible and Mimi's head being nerfed at the end of Cataclysm was the last big Blue post about mount drops, correct me if I am wrong).
There have though been several posts on the WoW Official forums saying there has been a noticeable increase of mounts in and around their home city's (this is post 5.1, not just a Account wide mount thing pre patch). I personally have seen it on Defias Brotherhood EU also, there has been a big increase, curiosity made me whisper a few and all confirm to be farming it at least 2 or 3 chars a week, and receiving post 5.1.
Coincident that more seem to be getting it 5.1? I don't think so, when you couple that with the wowhead database now showing it as 0.8% (I am positive it was 0.7% weeks before 5.1) and also add the few forum posts with folk saying they know a few people, friends / guilds, that are seeming to receiving since the patch more often, I'd like to think it has indeed been buffed.
As of posting this on the 2nd of February 2013, it shows the drop rate as 0.8% on the database.
Give it a few months and see where it is then.
I'm actively farming it on 8 chars a week. I have been farming it for a long time now, no doubt hundreds of runs across my account, so let's hope it'll drop for me soon!

With a combined shadow priest managed to nuke down quite comfortably. Mount dropped too on my 2nd ever attempt. He rolled 1, I rolled 9. he was rather upset, but hey can't win em all. If the drop rate really is still 0.3% then i feel like a pretty lucky guy. Others suggest the drop rate is now buffed to 1% since implementation of 5.1.

My advice take a friend and go get your mount while the drop rate seems too good to be true.

Before the famous patch 5.1 it was 0,45% here on wowhead and on wowdb it literally increased from 1,3% to 1,7% and then went down till 1,2% now, EVERYTHING suggests that it's been indeed buffed to 1% but only recently.

We have said many times this buff was as of patch 5.1, but I'm actually unsure about this: I started serious farming a bit before that, and I'm pretty sure it was showing 0,30% on wowhead; if it raised that much after so long time (from 0,30 to 0,45%) it can mean only 1 thing: the buff was actually with the patch 5.0.4, the one which gave us pandaria talents while keeping the level cap at 85.

Just won this mount with my weekly Onyxia solo. I gotta say I have been on a luck streak. I won Ashes of Alar 2 weeks ago and won the Utgarde mount a couple days ago. I also won 50k in a transmog contest yesterday. Yay me!

For me i think i did it twice in pug for the raidroll 20k,didnt drop but after a while i decided to go and kill myself, in the first time dropped and i ninja from my boyfriend, then i made in the same night after onixia, stonecore for the mount, dropped after 3 tries, then i was in vortex pinacle and the mount dropped from the first try, i was very lucky that night, and now after like 100 and something dropped ases of al'ar thanks God my bf didnt ninja :))

I've helped my mate doing the Military wing in naxx for 2 months now, yet we haven't seen Slayer of The Lifeless drop a single time (which i already got), then to compensate him I told him we could do Onyxia and hope Quel'Serrar would drop...Then all of a sudden, the sword drops and we get all dandy..then i see the ^&*!ing mount beneath it and i could feel my heart burst through my chest. And as nice as he his, he let me have it as i've helped him out in Naxx

So..for all you unfortunate people out there..Help out your friends and you will be rewarded handsomely.

I just did 10 man Ony and the mount dropped! Only killed her in 10 or 25 when it was current content about 10 times or so. First time since then that I killed her and got it!

I just want to throw out this possibility, but there was recently an exploit for Onyxia which resulted in people being able to kill her several times a week. This has since been fixed, but I'm thinking that the droprate has NOT been buffed, and indeed, people have simply been using this exploit to farm her, resulting in wowhead recording many more mount drops.

People that think the % drop rate has been increased because more of these have been seen recently may be interested to know a bug recently with Onyxia resetting and dying but still giving loot was almost definitely the reason for this. She could be farmed until the mount dropped and it looks like that's what happened on alot of servers

P.s this bug is now fixed so just don't get too excited thinking she is giving free mounts out now....she's still stingy with the mount love!

Finally got this, so time to tell the story of my farming, hopefully not getting downrated as it's exactly how the farming was.

Started soloing onyxia back in March 2.012 on my 85 blood dk with 372 item level, full dps gear, and 2-manned on my arms warrior in around 390 item level with a holy paladin friend.

Has been this way for a few months, and I also used my dk together with my friend's mage, even if my dk could solo it, for a bit quicker run, we always did it faster than 5 mins back then, and I didn't even know this mount was rarer than other ones.

A few months later, we started doing separate solo-runs again on our dks and just 2-man warrior + paladin, more chance for the mount, and when patch 5.0.4 was introduced, and with it second wind (new warrior healing ability, when you are under 35% hp you get healed by 3% per second), I IMMEDIATELY tried it solo, and was able to as fury with a souldrinker and a shield, so started solo farming on 2 chars in that moment.

When MOP was introduced, I levelled 3 more chars (arcane mage, combat rogue, protection paladin) to 90 and started farming with them as well, without ever losing a reset, soloed her with these chars around in mid October.

Then, in mid November, I levelled another blood dk to 82 and with only 73k hp, I was able to solo onyxia, so did it with 6 chars since then.

Of course a friend of mine who has been more lucky than me on everything in this game more or less, did his first solo run on his 90 dk the 2nd December, 22nd run in total (I was at 123 attempts account wide at the time) and he got it, but well, at least I got the motivation to level even more blood dks since then.

Since then I levelled EVERY week 1 more blood dk from 55 to 83 (bit easier fight than 82) and soloed onyxia with all, I never lost a reset neither for killing onyxia with all chars I had, nor for killing onyxia with 1 more char compared to last week.

After some months of painful levelling (42 hours each week) + 5 hours of onyxia kills, today, before starting my kills, I knew I already had killed onyxia 238 times and that I could've killed her 17 more, so max 255 runs for this lockout.

I did like always my low level dks first, after around 3 hours and half of kills, I started with my 90 chars, and my combat rogue was first.

The fight was quite normal till 40% onyxia hp: nuke on phase 1, use defensive cooldowns, kill whelps, shuriken toss on onyxia, keep recuperate up, but I had quite a bad p3 transition, a lot of whelps came and onyxia hurts already on leather.

I still had all defensive cds ready though, and despite being very close, I managed to kill her, and after saying "ok" to all items accepting, I saw the reins of the onyxian drake looted, not even noticed the icon of the item till I had it in inventory.

Killed onyxia for revenge after with my other 90 chars, but 251 kills to have the mount dropped in the end.

Good luck to all the others there who killed this drake over 100 times and haven't got it yet, it exists, just keep farming and never give up, I'm not the most unlucky, a player in the .us servers had to do 427 kills, 7 chars all weeks since wrath to have it dropped, and it will be very hard to beat his record, it's 4 times more unlucky than the average.

I used to run this weekly for about 2 months back in cata without it ever dropping. I had forgotten about it up until last week when a friend got it. I decided to start farming it myself. Killed her that same week it dropped for my friend and no drop. Killed her today, 2nd run since MoP, and the mount dropped. Still obtainable. I don't know if drop rate has been increased or I am really lucky. I guess in the end I don't care because I've not got an awesome mount. Happy farming and good luck.

So finally got this the 19th February, 251 runs since 11 months across 17 chars (12 blood dks level 82-83-84 with some OP mop gear and 100k hp or so and 5 level 90 chars).

I believe it's actually been buffed to 1% and that I just got unlucky, the cumulative chance to have seen it drop after so many runs is around 92%.

Good luck to all those who did 100+ runs and still haven't got it.

Btw, here's my 251 kills (would be 255) for anyone who doesn't believe it and has 5 mins (cause it's an enormous screenshot and takes a while to load) http://imageshack.us/f/705/onyxiafarming2.jpg/ but finally done with this and hopefully these dks will come useful for other mount farming, such as headless horseman mount.

Just got mine on DK, All of sudden the 3 long years of farming are coming awarded.

This mount is very very rare drop from Onixya Liar 10/25M at Lvl90 Almost everyone can solo it if you play your part right.

Also this mount is Account wide meaning you can mount it on any chart from Lvl60 if you have the flying riding skill learned. ( Ally, horde doesn't matter still able to mount )

I submitted a SS of me flying on it in Pandaria on my DK - with my sweet dual war glaives.

Got this amazing mount on Tuesday! I ran the 10 man with my boyfriend (priest) on my level 90 Arms warrior. I would do the damage while she was on the ground and he would keep me alive. When she flew into the air and the whelps started attacking, he would get her since he has more ranged attacks, and I would keep the whelps off of him. Now to continue running so he can get the mount. :3

I would just like to state, i do not class this mount as rare any more. The drop chances of various mounts such as Ashes, Onyxian etc. Which were classed as VERY RARE. Have now become extremely easy to get, and their chances to drop increased. I am gutted, considering i spent so many years farming.. Obtained it legitimately, only to have everybody get it the next expansion.. It's insane.. It has really put me off Warcraft, i would happily have my mount taken from me to farm it again if it was a legitimate very rare drop. I loved the fact this mount was that rare, that when you saw it.. You'd whisper them with amazement! Now.. Somebody rides a Black Drake and pops out the Onyxian asif its a vendor mount...

Just got the mount about... 30 minutes ago? Thought i would come on here and see what all of you have said... Tonight marked my 5th run of ony... It dropped and i shrugged it off like no big deal... I had no idea that this mount was this rare. To be honest, if someone offered 100k+ for this mount, i would've given it away in a heartbeat...

Haha me and a buddy run onyxians lair and Karazhan tonight (April 10, 2013) it was my third run of onyxians lair and his first and boom Reins of the onyxian drake drops, i outroll him for it and get it :D Then we decide to run kara right after ( We felt like we were on a luck streak) it was his 2nd run of kara and my like thousandth and yet again boom reins of the firey warhorse drops and he outrolls me for it and gets it. So 2 mounts in 1 night both about 1% drop rates right after each other.its been a amazing night. But i have one question for you... YOU JELLY BRAH?

I logged in today very early around 9:00 server time and tried to get the Darkmoon trinket but i was late, after few mins i got /w from one of my friend how he got Onyxian drake dropped. I was so mad at him how lucky he was and told him to wait because im going to solo her now, I would solo here anyways because i do that every week just not so early. I had some weird feeling that im going to get her now, and guess what she dropped for me also. After that we both went outside Orgrimmar and took a screenshot together how we both ride her. I dont know what happend there, was that pure luck getting her 10 mins after my friend or not but i guess we will never know :)

+1 this so people can see that it is possible to get the onyxia mount in a ten man after MoP!

I just got it on my lowly pvp geared arms warrior. was a pain in the @&& when she went up and i was down on the ground for 10-15 mins killing her adds and spamming shockwave and thunder clap whenever i got the chance. for melee dps...if you are soloing for the mount, just kill the adds and spam aoe when you get the chance, because she is just out of reach for your melee moves. Casters...I don't know i dont play ranged much, but as long as you have some way to heal yourself when she attacks you in the air and you kill her adds, you will be fine until she comes back down. she does hit hard, but if you have hots or quick heals that don't waste a lot of mana then you are in the clear.

Just be careful of all the adds, it gets annoying but if you dont pay attention she will come down and you could waste some time. pretty easy kill because it is a low level raid and you can burst her down. if you are going for it...GL!

Note: after about getting her down to half health then she goes up in the air. if you want to be safe doing this run, take a heals, caster, and a tank or tank pet so you don't have to hold all the aggro.

Yeah melee can be pretty annoying. My Blood DK and my Guardian druid easily stay alive, but are pretty limited when she goes up. Started casting moonfire and wrath with my Guardian :-P
From a spellcasters point of view, a reasonably geared Balance druid (iLvl 484), it's pretty easy. Got the More Dots achievement on first solo try with balance druid.
When she's out of melee-reach, she still takes damage from spells and shots. So just keep on blasting on Onyxia, but make sure you got some AoE off cooldown when adds come. Ofcourse hurricane is always usable but in combo with starfall it goes just that little quicker = less damage.
Also did it on little worse geared ele-shammy, practically same story, also got the achievement, but I was halfway through my health and almost out of mana (got mana-issues with my shammy, but that's probably just me).
Hunters take along a tanking-pet. I myself had 5 spititbeasts with me, 1 tank specced with me and 4 dps for the cavalery. Make sure it's on defensive and NOT on assist. As hunter you can also keep on shooting Onyxia when she's up, so when on assist, your pet goes after her, can't reach and leaving you all open for adds. Pet on defensive, and you ignoring adds and full on Onyxia, pet will mostly take on adds, sometimes you'll have to send it towards them. Half the time I myself had full aggro from Onyxia, but she did reltively little damage. If needed redirect is always an option. Also make sure you take care of your pet and heal it once in a while.
Had Lifespirits and my spiritbeasts for extra heals.

Here is my rotation as a 502 (<<Currently) BM hunter -
1. G91 Landshark. (From Blingtron or Engineering.)
2. Stampede.
3. A Murder of Crows.
4. Glaive Toss.
5. Kill Command.
6. Serpent Sting.
7. Widow Venom.
8. Concussive Shot.
9. Spammed the crap outta Arcane Shot to dump focus then Cobra Shot to bring focus up.
10. Scatter Shot.
11. Rinse & repeat after CD's are up again, mostly going for Glaive Toss, Serpent Sting, Arcane Shot & Kill Command.

Adds -
When in phase 2, the Onyxian Whelps came out, I stopped attacking Onyxia & used Glaive Toss, Multi-Shot, Kill Command & Arcane Shot on them & they died fairly quickly. Phase 3 was over so fast that the Onyxian Lair Guards didn't spawn.

Then when she was at 20%, I started spamming Kill Shot, Glaive Toss, Kill Command & Arcane Shot till she died.

*I am in NO WAY saying this is the correct way to down Onyxia. This rotation just worked for ME. It's possible it might not work for you.

I farmed this mount for not too long. 25 runs and got it. I think I found a glitch. If you just burn ony and don't touch the adds at all, the drake will drop. Now, I've only tried it one time. Please comment confirming this or not.

Just snagged this unique mount today after about 12 runs with multiple characters. To my experience of reading over forums it has been known to drop a lot more often on Normal rather than Heroic. Mine dropped for me on Normal. Good luck! Happy hunting!

I can confirm that this drops in Unclaimed Black Market Container, and you can loot it from this even if you already have the mount.

Weird thing: noticed the 1,14% drop rate? How's that? I know it was like 0,30% in cata and then it's been buffed to like 1% as of 5.0.4 starting mop patch, but apparently it's even higher, maybe 1,5% and still climbing?

Was able to solo this easy as a prot paladin,

45 kills later and the mount finally dropped for me!
Was on 10m, had done all the solos on 10m.
Tried to solo 25m for the first time and it was easily done just took a while and not really worth it.

Mount looks awesome!

Finally got mine this evening on my Spriest ^_^

28 runs on my Destro Warlock (ilvl 487)
29 runs on my Surv Hunter (ilvl 449)
16 runs on my Blood BK (lvl 88, ilvl 414)
And on the 20th run on my Spriest (ilvl 502) it finally dropped!

All were done on 10 man.

For the ones who still don't have it, keep on running. One day you're lucky!

Just got mine on my 6th or 7th solo kill. Very lucky. I was surprised that it didn't give me a feat of strength though like the other rare mounts do. Especially considering how rare it was and still is.

Not sure why they say the percentage for this is so low? I ran it on sunday (8/11/13) with three of my 90's solo, no luck. Ran it Monday (8/12/13) with a random warrior for an x-mog item he wanted and the mount dropped for me.

Got mine today on Laughing Skull from the Black Market Auction House. This server has been dying a bit for the past few years. Bid 50k gold. Got outbid at 52,500 when time went down to "short". Went back and bid 60k. Some other person flew in and looked and saw I got mail and my heart sunk thinking I was outbid again. I won it and I think 60k isn't bad considering Invincible's Reins went for 999,999g a few weeks ago. I guess the guy wanted to make sure he wasn't outbid lol.

I'm wondering if the drop rate is actually higher than as stated? I just attempted on my druid, didn't get it. Then again on my hunter (her first time in there) and she got it! She's a lvl 90 512 BM so it was pretty easy to solo..had my shale spider out for the stats buff, laid explosive trap for the whelps once they came out and POW drake went down!

I'm not typically lucky with these things so getting this in 2 tries has me feeling pretty awesome right now lol makes me feel better about the 2 weeks of waiting for the oh-so elusive Mr. Aeonaxx haha I shall have him one day!

Here's a fun story about my Onyxian Drake. This mount has a 1% drop chance, apparently, and I'm extremely new to mounts... it's my fourth. Well a new and benevolent WoW friend decided to take me to try for this one (for himself, unbeknownst to me). My first ever visit it dropped... he took it... but then he got me the black drake so I was still grateful! ^_^

Then, the second time we went, yesterday, it dropped again! "Shut the @#$% up." He said.

I have thus concluded that I am a lucky charm. If ever you're in Garona... take me for mount runs.

Or, it could be the more likely case that Blizzard changed the drop percentage b/c they hate having joyful players. No colors for you! Turn it all gray!

I just got this after 40 solos.

To the people saying the drop rate has gone up or is changing, that is incorrect.

Think about it! When this raid came out with required 10 or 25 people. You did it at least once a week unless you had other toons. 40 weeks for me to get it, that's 10 months. So, if I would have been in a raid having 10 or 25 people, I would have been rolling against 9 to 24 other people.

Now that it is easy to solo with any class, all those people that used to be in a raid to get it back in the day are soloing it.

So now say instead of having 10 raids a week of 10/25 people, you have 100/250 solos going on. This will make it show up then ever.

Account wide mounts makes it so it also appears around a lot because all alts can ride it.

Also the BMAH sells it and other mounts too.

I <3 it even if it shows up more. I don't have the snowflake attitude. I like seeing my toon on it.

Finally got mine the other day, after running Onyxia's Lair nearly every week for over a year. I've noticed mine has a small hole in her left front paw, you can see through her hand to what's behind her and I've not seen this on any others (in screenshots at least, haven't seen anyone else around with it to compare). Anyone know anything about this?

Got this mount today, took about 6 weeks of farming on 5 different characters, it is quite easy to solo on most classes, just not at 66% she will fly into the air and melee cannot hit her until she flys down at 40%

Dropped for me, today on my 9th (non-consecutive) kill.

Solo'd as an iL533 Arms Warrior and on Air Phase I used Heroic Throw, Shattering Throw & Storm Bolt to get her to land; dealt with the other pests as necessary.

You're still gonna get hit hard, but it's doable...

Gosh after reading comments about months and a year farming, I was hesitant to post...but

I got this mount on my first attempt.

I solo'd it 10 man. I don't know if there was a magical combination but, I'm a survival hunter, i539, used my sporebat pet and forced it to dust at the beginning of the encounter, was food buffed at +275ag, with an agility flask +1k, then drank a luck potion right before I engaged. She was two-shots away from dying by the time she took off into the air and I downed her while all the adds were up.

I was beyond shocked to see that I had looted it. It almost makes up for the exotic pet I want to tame, that I still haven't seen in 6 months of hunting.

Managed to pick this up on BMAH on burning legion EU for 99k! Worth every penny....

Lost a roll on this in WOTLK and been soloing ever since with no luck. Had to fight off a lot of competition but after seeing "won Onyxian drake" it was safe to say it made my night! Possibly my week!

Just had mine drop on Blackrock US server. I had been solo farming 10man onyxia on my horde ret pally "flawss" for about a month before it dropped for me. FYI it is pretty easy at 90 to solo onyxia, even without good gear. My ret pally has like 425 item level and I managed to get the acheivment for killing her in less than 5 minutes today (the same run that I got the mount from). It was maybe my 6th kill when it dropped. I guess im lucky compared to most other people. Now to find another mount to farm. I also got a sulfuron ingot as well as eye of sulfuras on my 2nd solo MC run, now just waiting/hoping for the hammer to drop.

Extremely low drop chance! countless runs since Wrath/Cata I haven't seen it drop once, and I leveled 5 characters in MOP just to run this and TK mount every week. definitely over 100 times kills with no luck. Last week I decide to level my warrior to 90 on a unpopular server, first kill on my warrior and this dropped! But it needs artisan riding, I only have 100 gold on that server so now have to farm 4500 gold to ride her!

Patch 5.4.2, still drops in 10 man. The drop rate is frustration but you can do it with some patience, and some alts.

Warlock 128 kills
Shaman 21 kills
Death knight 6 kills
Hunter 5 kills
Rogue 3 kills (dropped)
Priest 3 kills
Mage 3 kills
Monk 2 kills
Total 170 kills

It's very trying, but very rewarding when it finally drops. Hang in there!

This dropped for my friend and I today after farming it on and off for two years. (He got the Azure drake last week, so I got this one this week)

You do not get an achievement after acquiring or learning the mount. It has a very unique look to it, which makes it one of my favorite mounts in the game. The purple stripes are a really cool touch as well.

Just keep farming, she'll drop it for you eventually. It is definitely worth the wait!

Just got mine today. It was my 5th run on my main and I got really lucky. I was in protection gear and spec and during flight phase just waited for shield to proc so I could hit her with it. Very nice mount!

So like most people I've been soloing multiple instances for various bosses and have put together some statistical likelihood that I want to share with you all so that you can use this information as well to your own bidding.

So I'm farming these mounts on a day basis
Reins of the Blue Proto-Drake 1.1% Chance to drop
Reins of the Raven Lord 1.6% Chance to drop
Armored Razzashi Raptor 1.0% Chance to drop
Swift Zulian Panther 0.96% Chance to drop
Reins of the Vitreous Stone Drake 0.77% Chance to drop
Reins of the Drake of the North Wind 0.8% Chance to drop

Now I want to look at the statistical likelyhood of NOT seeing any of the above drop, we use an inverted value for the above (1% turns to 99%, 1.5% to 98.5%). The calculation is as followed

0.989 x 0.984 x 0.99 x 0.9906 x 0.9923 x 0.992 = 93.94% Chance of none of the above mounts dropping. (6.06% chance of at least one mount dropping)

I improve this by running this 7 times a week = 0.9394^7 = 64.56% Chance of no mounts dropping
OR run this 21 times a week with 3 alts = 0.9394^21 = 26.91% Chance of no mounts (73.1% chance of at least 1 mount!)

Wednesday I also include 3 weekly mounts which include

Ashes of Al'ar 1.96% Chance to drop
Fiery Warhorse's Reins 0.85% Chance to drop
Reins of the Onyxian Drake 1.13% Chance to drop

This day the chance for nothing is (daily mounts) 0.9394 x 0.9804 x 0.9915 x 0.9887 =90.28% chance of nothing dropping - or 9.72% chance of one or more mounts dropping :)

I finally got this mount last week.

I killed onyxia every week on my main, it finally dropped on the 65th kill.
I also killed onyxias 27 times on priest, 23 times on hunter, 4 times on shaman and 33 times on my lock (that was back when it was level 80 current content.

So in total, i killed her over 140 times until it dropped. So keep those heads held high, you will get it eventually!

Based on the data from Jazzycakes2 here is a spreadsheet that will help you know the odds of a mount dropping if you are doing multiple runs and maybe using more than one character to farm them.
Will depress some people and hopefully encourage others!

I got the Onyxiam Drake mount today after about a month and a half of grinding. It was the only day that I wasn't mentally crossing my fingers for it. Totally didn't expect it, the saw it in the sidebar where it lists every loot dropped. It took me a few minutes to comprehend that I had beat the tiny 1.3% chance drop. So happy, she's super cool looking, and not to mention fast :D

For anyone having trouble with killing her and all the adds without stressing, I found a good way to do it:
First unload all you've got at her, facing her. When she prepares to do her Bellowing Roar ability, turn to face the same way she is, up against the back wall. This will make sure that you don't get feared towards all the eggs with the small drakes in them. It also lets you see her whole cave so you can see them adds coming when they first head towards you. I used to get feared into all the eggs and die a lot, and doing this technique, I find it doesn't happen anymore.

Soloed Ony on a 520 Demonology Warlock on 25 man
The mount dropped, but the fight is a little harder than you think in 25 man. I used a Soulstone and there's a glitch where you can use it after you die and she still be up with the same HP. I don't see Blizzard fixing this.

The adds spawn more in 25 man so AoE damage is advise if you play on that, just the one time I did 25 man it dropped. I have always soloed 10 man, the mount has never dropped. So mix it up a bit you may get lucky.

I want to warn anyone thinking about farming this mount. I've been farming it now for FOUR YEARS, usually multiple toons a week. I have many way over 500 attempts in and this effin mount will never drop for me. I understand rng but I honestly think people who claim they got it to drop on their first few tries are lying through their teeth. I think the drop rate was accidentally nerfed to the point where this mount is virtually unobtainable.

I just soloed Onyxia for the first time ever (and the first time I've done Onyxia's Lair period) this morning and I got the mount on my first try. I did it on my warrior which took me about 20 mins to kill because of the second phase. Glad i got the mount and the 22 slot bag because that's about the only thing I cared about dropping anyway. A couple days earlier I duo'ed "The Eye" with my best friend and Ashes of Al'ar dropped and he won the roll. That was also the first time he or I did "The Eye" ever.

The mount finally dropped for me this morning. I have been soloing it for some time now. I take 20 level 90's in weekly, some I am in 10 player mode and my stronger dps I do 25 player. Just for the record, when it dropped for one of my weakest hunters I was in 10 player mode, so I can confirm it does still drop in 10 player. Best of luck to everyone farming it.

My husband had been farming for a whole year before getting Reins Of The Onyxian Drake - it was a proud moment, however you can imagine his anger when I went in there with my main for the first time and had it drop on the first run.

I have been running Magisters' Terrace since I could easily solo it and have never had Swift White Hawkstrider drop for me, however it dropped first time for my husband. I just seems that you can never guarantee a mount drop, no matter how many times you run through an instance. Its badly annoying, but just remember that it has to drop eventually... right?

I got Ashes of Al'ar last week, now I got the Onyxian Drake. I wasn't excited much, I wanted him for the Drake Collector achievment, but I changed my mind once I mounted for the first time. It's really beatiful drake! With Experiment 12-B & Azure Drake it's the best of all "simple" drakes. Love it!

I needed 75-100 kills, I'm not sure exactly...

For me this seems to be the ''Most hard to get item ever''
My rogue have done onyxia 96 times
My druid 78 times
and few more runs on other alts and i easily done over 200 runs and never seen the mount drop.

Dropped at 179 Kills according to the addon Rarity. 95% of those (and the one it dropped on) were solo 25M kills.

I just got this cutie on my first time trying on my DK (9 attempts total)
She's the RNG's chosen one, only good things happened with her.

If things are not dropping, try making a new alt. It's not like it takes a lot of time to lvl a toon nowadays

It's my first rare mount, I'm crying ><! Not dismounting ever again !

Wowhead, There is a mistake in the drop location! It says it drops from onyxia, but it says shes located in Temple of Ahn'Qiraj, please fix this :)

TL;DR Download Rarity and SavedInstances addon to track mount drop rate and your raid lockouts across account.

I want to add a comment to people still farming this mount, Im not going to say how many times it took me to get it, because that is useless information.
What i did do though, i downloaded an addon off of curse called 'Rarity' and it keeps track of your attempts, and complies it across all your toons.
I have 7 alts, so I was able to farm 7 times a week, and it would track that and give me a new ~approximate chance for the next time i killed her, found it helped me stay motivated.
I also used an addon called 'SavedInstances' to track all my saved raids on all toons for the week, so I could better maintain which characters I still needed to run on.

for those that want this mount be prepared for a long grind it is a small chance to get it. I have bin rining this on 22 toons and have 304 kills on her and I still have not sean it drop. and since panda thay uped the rate to a 1% chanse per kill.

wow gods hear my plea why wont this mount drop for me....

Was running this yesterday for some transmog gear on my warlock and noticed this mount had dropped. I honestly wasn't even aware there was one from here. Needless to say I tried my luck with all the other mount dropping raids to no avail. Still a nice surprise though.

Started farming this seriously last year on 25M and after reading comments switched to 10M a few months ago. She finally dropped after total 65 tries for me. This is the most beautiful drake and well worth the effort.

I got mine after 16 attempts. 15 with my main char, 1 with my hunter. And it dropped on my hunter.
