Dropped for me on the patch 3.2 PTR today on the 535th Deviate Guardian/Ravager kill inside Wailing Caverns. It's purple!

I'd estimate a drop rate similar to the dragon whelps.

Found this guy after approx. 10 WC first room clearings. All it takes is pulling every raptor in the ring around the river area (A path such as this.) and then aoeing them all down. There are about 30 raptors each time you do this so it took about 300 kills for me.

EDIT: After me losing half my gear in the latest build and being forced to re-copy my character, I went through this again and it only took me 209 kills, meaning it has about a 0.4% drop chance.

Every time I cleared the front room, I counted 30 raptors. They are located here in the instance.

The most annoying part about farming this is the five instance/hour restriction and the limited number of raptors in the instance. Actually killing the raptors is easy enough.

Raptor Hatchlings can be found on rare and elite raptors throughout the game world. In addition, an Obsidian Raptor Hatchling can be purchased from Breanni in Dalaran.

The ones outside the instance are normal mobs, so they wouldn't drop the pet.

If you look up top at the tooltip, you'll see it's a white meaning it is BoE (for now).

The pets that drop from rare spawns in the open world (ie Wetlands) will have a 100% drop rate on their particular pet. It has been assumed that this and the Razzashi Hatchling have about a 1% drop rate, equal to the Whelplings.

Confirmed on live server, dropped today at 3:46 PM Server Time on Gnomeregan, 9 kills made before drop. made an additional 80 kills before 5 run limit and never saw another one.

Took 2 instance resets, so about 60 raptors before one dropped for me. The map that marks where the raptors are (linked by Alkene above) is pretty accurate.

FYI, the pet is NOT bind on pick up.

Farmed raptors inside instance only. Got it fairly easily. Doesn't make a noise when you click on him but he does occasionally make a baby raptor roar and shakes his head around.

Considering http://www.wowhead.com/?item=8491 is not a 100% drop rate, it is still a valid question.
I did manage to get my first raptor. I don't think I'll be coming back for a second of the same one to see the drop rate.

As far as I know the 5 instance per hour lock is account wide so it doesnt matter you can just do it with 1 char wont make any difference.

Did 3 runs of the beginning upper circle of WC, approxmiately 70ish raptors and i got it. Easiest to farm.

Fairly certain that the Deviate Hatchling has a .1% chance to drop.
My friend got one on his 24th run, and I'm still working on it and just finished my 28th run.

Some people are going to hate me for this, but I got this on my first clear, after about 10 raptors.
I've paid my dues with poor drop rates though, so this was a nice change.

Edit: Sold this for 3k gold on the AH, sold pretty fast, so I went back out to WC today and got this again on my 5th clear just before I got the 1 hour lockout. Looks like I'm getting some good luck. Especially nice since it's my birthday tomorrow!

I got kicked out after the 5 Instances per hour thing, which i didn't even know about so i was $%^&ed but 5 runs, 80 Priest in Shadow spec, ran around, bubbled,then Vampiric Embrace on every raptor in there, then ran around the big circle in the middle til i got back to where i started, and kept buble up as it ran out, and then jumped off the ledge and they all ran aroung pulling the rest, then LoSd them and then Mind Seer'd them and all 1 shotted didn't take 1 hit. but still no drop form 5 runs :(

Does this drop from both raptors inside the instance? (Ravagers an Guardians)

As Ravagers are the same colour as the pet, so i assumed they would be the only ones to drop it.

The point of the comments is to provide constructive information about an item, since not everyone that is killing the Raptor is reporting here the drop rate they experienced, it is not a valid way of estimating the drop rate.

Someone might be excited enough about them getting a pet on their 3rd kill that they will post it here, while someone who spent 600 kills farming the pet might not be so inclined.

I have currently farmed the Leaping hatchling, Darting Hatchling, Razormaw hatchling and the Deviate hatchling. The rare mob drops are a guarenteed drop so the 100% chance for them is correct. The Deviate hatchling took me 5 clearings of the first room in the Wailing Caverns to obtain, thats approximately 130ish raptors killed so I'd guess that the 1% drop rate is indeed correct.

Drop rates are still just a chance though, no matter how good the chance may be, so its still possible to get one on your first kill or not see one in 1000 kills.

Edit: I've farmed 7 of these guys now here are the number of full raptor clears to obtain each.
1st drop: 5
2nd drop: 3
3rd drop: 15
4th drop: 2
5th drop: 3
6th drop: 8
7th drop: 6

A friend of mine also got one after 8 tries. So lets see what the math on that is: Now including my friends run thats a total of 50 clears of the raptor room. Now at 30 raptors per run thats 1500 dead raptors, divide that by 8 and you can see that on average and rounding up it takes 188 raptor kills to see one drop. Now I know this is a very small sample but from what I've been hearing from other people farming this pet is that this is about average. So you are looking at 6 -7 attempts on average with a 0.5 to 1% potential drop chance.

Got mine on my 5th run, took about 30mins :-) Good luck, they're easy to kite around in a circle and back near the path to the entrance if you go anti clockwise, as a death knight I could DD, bloodboil and have Unholy aura up + Nitro on my boots to help :-).

I should note here that at the time of your downrate spree, no official numbers have been given by wowhead because of insufficient mod data.

Any reasonable person realizes the inherent inaccuracy of anecdotal information and will take the reported estimates with a grain of salt. However, anecdotal reports are better than nothing. Your attempts to destroy the only data we _do_ have are nothing but counterproductive. The fact that you make it clear that this is due to your own frustration makes it worse.

tl;dr: You're not the sheriff in these parts. If you feel the need to mass downrate estimates in the absence of mod data, you're the one in the wrong.

Drop rate seems hard to nail down an estimate on from the looks of above comments, I don't know if some people are horribly unlucky, or some are ridiculously lucky, difficult to tell right now. Only more data will tell 'o'

I got it myself on my third run, 70ish raptors total. I'll probably farm in a couple of more times in the next few days and get a better idea of what the drop rate is. Anyone got an idea of how much you can AH these for?

Finally, I like the way Blizzard have made it a white item too. Ninja-proofing for PUG groups :D

I got it after 7 runs. And after read all the comments about this pet. makes me think it's 1% dropp rate.
I also seen ppl that got it 5-10 runs. Wich means 1% :).
For those that gets it first mob or maybe after 20 runs means you are really lucky or very unlucky

I agree that from the looks of things, 5-10 runs seems to be the trend, although obviously a few anomalies are to be expected on both sides of the trend.

However, having then said that, your drop percentage doesn't match with the trend of runs done before it drops. If we fully cleared the raptors on each run (30 raptors), that leaves the trend at between 150 and 300, making the drop rate between 0.33% and 0.67%, giving you an average of 0.5%.

However, since we're using the number of RUNS as what to go by here, not the number of raptors, I have to be pedantic and say that to get a drop after 5-10 runs means it could be anything from your first kill of your 5th run to your 30th kill on your 10th run and still fit the trend, meaning it's now between 121 ((4x30)+1) and 300 kills, making the drop rate between 0.33% and 0.83%, giving you an average of 0.58%. Not a huge difference I grant you, but a difference nonetheless.

I'll probably update after farming it a few more times, hoping the AH will make it worth my time of course (or many +1s).

And if my maths is somehow off for this, I'm going to be very $%^&ed off D:

tl;dr: Drop rate currently looks like 0.58% from the looks of things, or 0.5%-0.6% if you want to be less specific. I'll update when I find out more.

Edit: M'kay, after more farming I've got a bit more to work with:

First drop: 3 runs
Second drop: 7 runs
Third drop: 1 run
Fourth drop: 14 runs
Fifth drop: 7 runs
Sixth drop: 9 runs
Seventh drop: 10 runs

..after which I got bored and had forgotten what the sun looked like.

Doing the math with these figures (you don't have to bother looking at the formulae if you don't want to, but if anyone spots anything wrong please correct me):

Minimum raptors killed in total for all drops = (30 x (total number of runs - number of drops) + number of drops)
Maximum raptors killed in total for all drops = 30 x total number of runs

Comes out with a minimum of 1327 kills, and a maximum of 1530, for 7 drops.

So the drop rate comes out as between 0.46% and 0.53%, 0.5% averaged out.

So I can safely judge from theory and actually trying it out that the drop rate isn't 1%, and I'd bet my Titanium Seal of Dalaran that it isn't even close to 2%, like the Armory would have us believe. It looks to be skittering around the 0.5% mark, but remember, a drop rate is a drop rate, you may be just be very (un)lucky.

The pet itself is very cute - a must have for any pet collector.

According to the Armory it has an 'Extremely Low' drop rate (1% - 2%). However, take this with a grain of salt, as the armory lists the same 1% - 2% drop rate for the whelpings, which are actually 0,1%. The only useful information that can be gained from the armory is that it only drops off 2 mobs inside WC; Deviate Ravagers and Deviate Guardians.

Also, keep in mind that once wowhead does get some data about this pet, the droprate will be skewed. People have been killing the raptors for a very long time, and the hatchling drop only just got added.

I went to Wailing caverns just to see if I could get one of these to add to my collection.

On my first instance, I got a drop.

I was so excited, I stayed and farmed another 12 instances, only running into the 5-per-hour lock once, and left with 6 hatchlings.

I was nice and gave 2 to some friends, but I AH'd the last 3 for a nice chunk of change.

Drops from the Deviate Guardian and Deviate Ravager in Wailing Caverns. It the easiest of the raptor hatchlings to get aside from the one you can buy. Drop rate is in the area of 1 in 250. I make this estimate from my own farming experience plus that of others in my guild. People farming it tend to on average get one about every 10 instance runs.

There are 30 mobs in the instance that drop the pet and you can run the instance 5 times in an hour giving you 150 shots in an hour to get the pet. Even if the higher 1 in 200 rate is accurate you should be able to get the pet in 2 sets of 5 instance runs each. Not bad in terms of pet farming.

The Guardians and Ravagers are located in the initial tunnel entrance after you come in and in the main cavern on the upper level. Simply make a circular route around the upper level of the first large chamber you come into after coming out of the tunnel the portal is located in. When you complete your route you'll be back at the tunnel to go out. Go out, reset the instance and repeat. Shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes or so to kill all the raptors you need each run.

While some of the comments aren't helpful (@Gerblis, for example), hammering down the drop rate on hard to find items is one reason people turn to Wowhead. Reporting how many kills it takes for an item to drop has some utility to people trying to gauge how long a project may take them. While Shakespeare it ain't, some of these are hardly stupid or asinine.

So, I went and farmed this. Got it on my first clear, and clicked it to learn to pet. I'm interested in farming it to sell it now. Some other items, if you have the item in your inventory or learned, you will not see them again. Does anyone know if this is the case with this item? If anyone knows, please respond. Only way I could foresee to tell this is if someone did the same thing I did, and then successfully farmed a second to sell. So, if you had this experience, please let me know! Thanks in advance for the response!

Yes, it will keep dropping after the first drop, I've had 3 drops myself, so you can AH them or send them to your other characters. I believe it's the case for all raptor hatchlings.

Got it on my 11th instance reset. It took me 7 minutes to round up all the raptors and loot them per run, so not a whole lot of time wasted on this one.

The only problems I encountered were 5 instances per hour (which I have to admit was a bit tedious) and the fact that my server is riddled with "Additional instances cannot be launched, please try again later."

Gotta admit though, It was funny seeing seven level 80 alliance toons, and a group of level 17 hordes waiting to get in. =p

If anyone wants one of the raptors..this is by far the easiest to get (besides the one in Dal.) I got this one with 2 resets..the instance is only like lvl 20..so it was cake to kill all the raptors and such, looting was most annoying for me. If you happen to be farming for the Gundrak Hatchling and dont have it after 800+ kills (like me) try for this one, your luck might change. :D

Venomhide Hatchling, for the mount quest. Also I'm a hunter but several on my server with the quest and Venomhide Hatchling are experiencing no drops in the instances as well. (I'm up to 72 runs and still nothing.)

Got mine after doing 10 runs (2x5 runs on seperate days).

Killed all them raptors in the starter area every time and reset, runs took 2 minutes at most.

Edit: I believe they are only found in the starter area of the Wailing Caverns (the actual instance), just make a circle and aoe. While running kill the non-raptors instantly so that ya won't have to loot them in the pile of raptors.

This may sound cruel, but when the first patch came out, I saw the huge opportunity to make some money off of these.

For the past week, since 3.2 came out, I've been farming these pets and I've picked up about 12 and I have been selling them for 1500g-500g on both auction houses, the neutral one, and through trade chats of both factions. In total, I've raked in a whopping 7000 gold,, and it keeps on coming in.

Part of the lure to these is that getting into the instance (on a high population server) is literally impossible. You could spend hours and hours running into the wall with no luck, much less getting the pet. I'd share my secret, but I don't want the ruin the market just yet.

I have been extremely lucky today. I got Takk somewhat quickly, (take a look at my screenies on the Takk page) and then this guy in the front tunnel of the instance, after maybe ten kills. Dart however took 6-7 hours and there were 5 other ppl waiting to ninja him. Next up: the sprite darter in Feralas!

took 17 Runs on my enhancement shaman to find just one raptor i hit the lock out for the 5 instances per hour.. thought i could go to one of my other 80s but the lock out goes to every toon you have on the Realm heh

I just finished my 35th run and still no pet. As for that whole drop rate, it has to be .1% with the rate I'm going at. I can clear the Raptors in 5 mins and do the 5 runs in 30 mins, During the whole 5 instances per hour crap i go check for Rares in Dustwallow Marsh and Barrens. Still waiting for Dart to spawn for me. I just hope it doesn't take me this long to get the ZG pet.

Ok, Random loot IS indeed random.
Decided to try to farm this cute raptor, while my lovely girlfriend was cooking us dinner
On the third run, i got one... But i decided to keep farming them, and on the next kill i got another one.
On the fourth run, i got 1 more.
So, now both my main and my alt has one of these, and one goes to the AH.
And im one lucky collector (96/100 at the moment)

This pet drops from Deviate Guardians and Deviate Ravagers, both found in Wailing Caverns in the first large cave inside the instance. Fairly easy to farm - enter the instance, make a trip around the upper area above the river killing the raptors (and, most likely, the boss Lady Anacondra, which spawns in this area) and looting as you go. Finish the circuit, leave and reset.

Note that the quests Deviate Eradication and Deviate Hides require you to kill deviate ravagers, as well as few other monsters in this instance, and can give you something else to accomplish while farming for this pet.

I'm getting really frustrated at this point. I've cleared the first room in WC 20 times and haven't had a single hatching drop.

I know I'm killing the right mobs, I'm not an idiot, but I still feel like something's wrong if people are getting these on the third or fourth clear (about 100 kills) and I haven't gotten it in 20 (600 kills).

I just can't figure out why this stupid thing hasn't dropped yet. It's killing me.

I farmed for this baby yesterday. Over 10 runs and still no pet so i gave up. Today i was gonna lvl my fishing in WC (cuz its so nice and quite) and instead of just avoiding the mobs i desided to kill my way into the tiny lake. Couldnt believe my luck when this little baby droped on the 5. raptor :D

Whew ~30 runs in, 5th run of the day, already looted 20/30 raptors for this run and *finally* got one. Keep trying if you can't get it, you'll find one eventually. This actually took me longer than the Ravasaur.

This puts me at 7/8 for raptor hatchlings! Saving Gundrak hatchling as a grind tool, probably for my warlock.

what may be helpful in considering the drop rate is the fact that wowhead is calculating on the numbers 131 out of 185255 loots and 100 out of 193965 loots of the 2 mobs that drop this item. now i don't know if this is the case for sure but many of those "reported lootings" of the mobs aforementioned could possibly have been done well before this pet was added to the game, making the % appear much lower than a true 3.2 patch only set of specimen numbers.

30 clears and counting. That's what, 900 raptors? I find as an elemental shaman the easiest way for me to do it is gather them all up and ae them down. If only there was a mod to automatically loot all the corpses around you.

you guys know that the long an item goes without dropping the higher the chance. so....at first the item may drop frequently but it will slow down. Took me 15 runs of WC try to get the deviate hatchling.

I'm a 54 rogue, I just went into WC to fish and was clearing the raptors on my way for the leather. I got this without even knowing it dropped there, from the third or fourth Deviate Guardian I killed.

I forsee this post not being extremely helpful as i have not got the pet yet but i have ran 9 times so i should get it to drop soon. as soon as i do I will post number of runs so that you can add everyone's totals on this page to increase accuracy of drop rate. the most taxing part of this process is not getting instance to launch but within 30 min or so i was able to do 4 runs which isn't that bad. there was a lvl 15 NE hunter there which i left alone and she was still outside after a run and a 60 dr dk was outside he /chickened me and spit on me so i had no choice but to disembowel him. then go in and make another round.

I got the razzashi raptor with only 3 runs but that is irrelevant to this post.

and from the data in comments average amount of runs = the sum of 5 3 15 2 3 8 6 8 3 7 1 14 7 9 10 which comes out to be one hatchling every 6.733333 runs which is 1 in 202 raptors which is 0.495%

This raptor is pretty easily attainable. Just clear the first whole room, run out, reset (5 times per hour, due to lock out). If you are a class that can handle it, I suggest running and gathering them all up, running out of Line of Sight of the caster humanoids until the turn the corner, the AoE everything down. Super easy, though really fast, so you will lock yourself out of instances pretty quick.

I've had three pets drop within about 7 instance resets.

This is a pretty cool pet though I have not been able to obtain one in my 20 odd runs. Though for a Warrior going counter clockwise seems to be the fastest route if your Charging and Intercepting since the raptors are grouped closer together. And as with most people, time saved can be used for other, more productive things. My fastest time was 3 minutes all raptors down and 4 going out, resetting, and re-entering.

I hope one drops for me tomorrow as I've gotten Leaping Hatchling after my most recent run/

A side note, I found it easier to Charge, Kill, Target, Kill when I could very well AoE them all down. This makes looting easier and saves time.

Easiest and most controlled grind of the (new) raptor HATCHLINGS

Some words of advice on maximizing this particular grind:

*You get 5 runs thru before your time limit of dungeon resets expires. Best case scenario ... if it didn't drop in these 5 runs...take an entire hr off.

Setup: From Orgrimmar...fly to crossroads...travel slightly southwest by mount to entrance of Wailing Caverns...from entrance you can avoid all mobs inside and enter main INSTANCE GATE...within 2 mins.

At this point there are 2 mob types: Deviate Guardian and Deviate Ravager(s) which are in a perfect circular loop...counterclockwise is most typical grind pattern. This loops takes roughly 5 minutes for a dps class and when complete you simply run back up the path and out the instance to reset and go again.

My honest evaulation of WORTH is ~300G if you can find it in the AH...which you won't.

The other hatchlings are much, much harder to achieve in terms of time and some involve sitting in place doing absolutly nothing waiting for a spawn.

Thus...great place to start

Well, if you're like me, you one-pulled everything. A word of advice when you've ended up one-pulling and you've killed them all in a crowded circle: Click on the tails to loot. It allows you to keep track of which ones you looted. Also, if one drops a green, leave it on there, so you know when you've gone full circle (or maybe more, depending on where you find the green).

Just a few minutes ago, I popped into WC on my fresh human DK with the intention of picking up some greens for a friend to disenchant, and.. it dropped on the third raptor I killed! I was floored.

I found my little guy by accident when I was looking for greens for my boyfriend to disenchant. I entered Wailing Caverns for the first time, killed between twenty to thirty raptors, and got him. To really have an idea how fast it was, I didn't even get to Lady Anacondria yet. Lol.

I am in love with the purple/blue coloration, since purple is my favorite color. But it's awesome to know that it has a 1% drop. I should go farm more on my Hunter. :D

I have been unfairly teased with this drop I guess. 3 days ago I decided to get the achievement for WC and had 2 of these drop in the first room in my first run. I didn't know how much they were worth and taught myself one and sold the other. After realizing how much they sell for I returned the next day and on my 1st run of that day I got another one. Came back yesterday, cleared the room 4 times and didn't get any. Good luck to everyone!

I got one last night, and then two more just now (about 4 kills apart) the drop rate seems a little better than 0.01%, or maybe i'm just extremely lucky.

Either way, I'd say the drop rate for this particular one has been about 3 in 100 for me

Just to put in my data as well:

I have run Wailing Caverns 20 times now with no drop. I'm starting to think this pet doesn't exist :) I'll get it, probably two on the same run after all of this struggle.

I actually think I'm being punished for my good luck elsewhere. In 25 minutes I found the Leaping Hatchling, Razormaw Hatchling and Crimson Whelpling(6th kill). Total good luck and I can't complain about my low drop rates in WC.

5 runs for me hatchling farming, so far nothing. which is ludicrous to me because ive looted over 30 items with LESS than a 1% drop, but no hatchling yet.

Edit: 10 runs. no hatchling. i am NOT looking forward to doing this for Zul'Gurub.

Confirmed - the raptors that drop the hatchling only load in the first room on the upper floor around Lady Anacondra's area.

Confirmed - there are exactly 30 raptors per run.

Fairly easy to obtain, considering it's just persistence and not luck/timing. I, myself got it on reset number 3 toward the end of clearing the room. Even though these aren't THAT difficult to obtain, nor that time consuming, these still go for like 500g on my server.

28 runs.... According to KillCount Addon, 402 guardians and 423 ravagers (but my pet accidentally killed a few so those don't count). And still no Deviate Hatchling.

Someone please alert me if I have to make some sort of sacrifice to the Deviate Gods or something, because I must have displeased them in some way.

Very low drop rate? Or did I just get very lucky. Took my lvl 80 mage into wailing caverns a couple of weeks ago, back to back clearing of the dinos, no pet. Then today, while bored I went and cleared 3 times, nothing, on the 4th clear, i got two of these pets back to back from two consecutive raptor kills. Currently on my server, they are way overpriced (Current AH Bid is 4k with a 6k buyout....seems a little steep), so I plan on holding onto the spare for another alt some day. Or to barter for a Razzashi hatchling, the only one I am missing.

This is pretty much to say, don't give up, work at it a little a time, and your little raptor pet will drop.

I got this on my second run through Wailing Caverns like two months ago through random dungeon. I didn't realize it was a pretty rare drop until I checked on here and saw that it was going for 1000 and 800g in the AH.

1 and 2% drop rate eh? I guess I got lucky.

Edit: Btw, I was a lvl 21 BE Rogue then.

I know alittle ''Trick'' you can use (I dont know if anyone else've said this yet) If you've played 5 instances and have to wait some, Go outside and look for the nest for another raptor (Dont remember the name, Sorry) But just search for Nest on WoWhead and take the one it says The Barrens!

I cleared WC about 4 times to get one. I would round up all the raptors and aoe them down. Takes around 5 minutes per run.

I have gotten 2 in about 40 resets.

This dropped to us by the first raptor in the instance and some guy just got it , i had the right to loot it but i didn't , i mean who wants to loot raptors , next thing i see is :
"X has earned the achievement " , scrolled up and found this.
to be honest there is an OK amount of raptors , should be gotten like written above.

Silly question: Why do we have to fight our way out in the open chasing vanity pets in nests, and right inside of this dungeon, loaded to hell with nests, we cannot get even ONE pet inside one of these nests?

So i decided to try my luck at a few "rare" spawns today and ended up with one of each in just under 4 hours:

Ravasaur Hatchling
Razormaw Hatchling
Darting Hatchling
Deviate Hatchling

NOTE= The deviate is dropped off Mob's in Whaling Caverns instance so it takes mob grinding to acquire. I've read of people running this instance as much as 60 times without a drop. I got mine on the first mob of the second run, so i killed about 35 raptors for it.

;) it's not that hard! just check back at all the spots! depending on how popular they are for farming on your server i recommend leaving a level appropriate ALT logged at each of the locations and just log off/on to check each of the different spots. I'm still not sure on the exact timing of the spawns, I may have just gotten lucky today (I also fished out Old Crafty in ORG in about 20 casts)

Most people thinks these raptors drops with 100% rate. I can confirm it doesn't has 100% drop rate. Killed Tark two times and nothing happens. Still keep doing it.

The only thing that is 100% is that it will drop eventually. That obviously doesn't mean it's going to drop every time you do the instance so you have to just keep resetting. I just ran through through the first section with all the raptors shown by an earlier post (quoted below, thanx!)

Every time I cleared the front room, I counted 30 raptors. They are located here in the instance.

The most annoying part about farming this is the five instance/hour restriction and the limited number of raptors in the instance. Actually killing the raptors is easy enough.

General side note: If you're having no luck, try checking "/who" for other players farming the same item in the area. This avoids you wasting too much time on farming this if someone else higher level is already doing so. I recommend you level up before attempting to compete. ;)

Just got this on my lvl 17 warrior, well dinged 18 while in the instance. This is the first time I've ever been in there also, just randomed up for a dungeon and this came up, when I ported in they were fighting the raptors, a little later, was looting and seen it pop up in the loot box. It was on group loot, no one said anything other than a shaman who later was saying he'd like to have that pet.

Actually, the rare named raptor mobs do NOT drop the pets anymore. You now have to search the area's in which they spawn/roam for their nests and loot that. The nest guarantee the pet, though.. Even though they typically are around 6-8 hour respawn rates.

I call shenanigans. I've reset 26 or so times. (I'm basing this off how many shards I have from the pauldrons the first boss drops, and since she doesn't always drop them, it's more then 26 runs) that's 26ish x 30 raptors. 700 deaths, no pet. :(
I have such bad luck with these sort of drops. I'm not looking forward to ZG.

I finally got it on my 15th run (only about 5 raptors in on that run). The first couple times I was running through I was afraid that I still had to look for a nest as well so I was herp derping and not reading what people were saying. I did about 4 runs afterwards hoping that another one would drop, but no such luck.

I guess I was really lucky this last time.

First time I tried to farm this, took me about 30, or so, runs before I finally got one.
I decided to try farming it again, since I needed to get my skinning up.
First run, nothing.
Second run, two in the same pile of bodies.
Third one, got yet another one.

I obviously plan on going back if my luck keeps up, to get more leather and hopefully another drop. :)

I got this without even trying, first run and I didn't even know this guy existed until I saw him in my inventory later. I think I'll keep him, I doubt he'll sell for much.

He sells for 1600g minimum on my server right now. I recommend holding onto this for a couple months at least if you're looking to make money out of this guy.

I started clearing the first room in wc with my husband we ran it 5 times and decided it was time to call it a night not to mention we were locked out. He tried the next day 8 times with no result. Later that day we decided to give it one more shot so we ran it on the second try 8th raptor we got it :) We were so happy we tried it again and walla the next try we got it again so back to back we looted it lol. Guess there is rare acceptions. So all together took him fifteen times and me seven to get it! So worth it just got to have patience!

I got both of mine on the 5th run, at roughly my 145 kill. It goes faster if you gather all of the raptors together from one side at a time and aoe them all.

Yeah, I believe everyone that it takes a long time to get this but i got this drop on my first run. :D Also, i almost sold it for the few silver it was said worth b/c I am a noob. Took me agggeees to get this pet. My BunnyHunter add-on says I got it on my 300th raptor, but I ran the instance maybe 5-6 times before installing that, so the figure is probably closer to 400-450.

I wiped out 15 generations of those raptors in Wailing Caverns, not a single one dropped an egg.

You'd think they would catch onto the whole sacrifice 1, save a thousand idea.

Expect to spend an hour or two in there, clearing the section full of raptors takes anywhere from 3-5min personally, but combine that with the downtime from 5 instances allowed per hour. Just hope you get more luck than I have.

Farmed three of these - if you're of high enough level, just run into the instance, gather up the entire initial "circle," AoE down, and repeat. I usually get a drop between my second and fourth reset.

I have done about 40 runs, no pet. However, i have found a faster way of looting them, kinda :)
I run around 'collecting' (agroing) all the raptors then use aoe at the start.
Foolishly I tried to see if they could kill my 85 mage, they got me down to 75% health before my sholders broke.. :(

First "farming" run, 2-3 pets from 150 and don't have this one. In here to re-do the quests post cataclysm and figured I'd find out what I actually had to loot to get the pet.

After reading the posts I was preparing to have to run it 5 times before herb farming a while... and then re-run it some more. Just after finishing this thread, the very next kill dropped one.

These also can be found in the Satchel of Exotic Mysteries that are rewarded via the LFD system. I did a double take when one randomly showed in my bag.

In the four years that i have played WoW, in all the alts that i ever created and in all the agonizing times i have been in that instance, i had never seen it drop before but when i went to get the instance achievement on my Death Knight, it literally dropped off the first mob in the instance.Just goes to show you, drop rates can be cruel.

I don't believe that Deviate Hatchling is that rare. I've done 2 runs (for quests, achievement) and... I got 2 pets. Yeah, 2 pets in 2 runs. I sold 1 of the for about 200g.

Just did Wailing Caverns on my level 19 mage on Xavius EU, after we killed like the second pack before Mutanus i looted a corpse and this dropped, sold easily for 1k buyout within 30 minutes. Good luck farming :)

I have been recently farming this pet for gold. This pet sells for 4k-6k on my server and basically it is a great way to earn money. I did 8 runs in Wailing Caverns before I got the pet and I am really thrilled with the drop rate for a 4k-6k pet. I with luck to everyone who is farming for it!

Note: It is really RNG, that does the drop so please do not downrate the comment becuase you did not recieve the pet after 8 runs.

I'm beginning to feel discouraged. I've now reset this dungeon 32 times with no drop to speak of. These raptors are holding out on me.

So on the 44th run through I got the drop off my 8th kill and on the 45th run through (for good measure) I got the drop on the 3rd kill. I was beginning to think it wasn't going to happen.

This also is obtainable within a SATCHEL OF EXOTIC MYSTERIES. I have confirmed this myself as I obtained one about 10 minutes ago after doing a Heroic Hour of Twilight dungeon and looting it within the bag.

I made a wowhead account just because of this lame pet...

After hours and hours in WC without anything that even resembles a raptor pet, I pretty much gave up.
Then I desided to do one last run. Guess what dropped off the first raptor i killed? Yep, the pet...
As I didnt know if it was some form of drop limit (one per dungeon run, I dont know), I continued the run, and the bloody pet dropped once again in same run!

My point is this, do not give up.. And even if it drops and you still have more mobs to kill, kill them too!

Ok, time for some maths to put things into perspective about just how long/how many runs it would take to get this to drop.

Given Wowhead's stated .2% drop rate and 24 raptors killed per run:

There is a 99.8% chance that each raptor will NOT drop a hatchling, therefore:
The chances that ALL 24 raptors in the run would not drop a hatchling would be .998 x .998 x .998 x .998... and so on and so on 24 times, or .998^24 which would be 0.953.
In other words, there is a 95.3% chance per run that you won't get a raptor, so therefore there is a

4.7% chance per run for at least one hatchling to drop.

The break-even point when half the people have gotten a drop and half haven't would occur around 14 runs, but keep in mind that 10% of people trying to farm for it will actually only have it drop after almost 50 runs according to the math, so luck still plays a pretty huge factor. As always, random will be random, just hope you aren't one of the unlucky ones.

I was randomly wandering around the Barrens leveling my skinning when I stumbled into the entrance of Wailing Caverns. I decided to go in because of higher level mobs to skin. So as many know skinning requires the mob to be looted and after I'd almost thoroughly ran through the instance, this little fella pops up and I rush to the AH. I check the price and find it's ~1500g-2000g. That's good money for me on my server ;)

So, everyone is reporting excellent drop times. I would like to put out there, for those who are like me, another bad run. True, this is one run, which means I am remarkably fortunate. However, for every bad run, there are people who farm it with similar results and finally give up.

Over 5 hrs farming, 1704 kills, 1 drop. That's approximately 71 runs for a single raptor.

Mind you, per wowhead, the count is 0.2%, or 2 out of every 1000, or 1 out of 500, so obviously my results are atypical. That said, I came to Wowhead, read over the easy drop rate, downloaded Bunny Hunter (which I love, by the way, but which told me the drop rate was 1:100), and decided that instead of just buying it off the auction house, I could easily manage 4-5 runs, especially since I could do them in one sitting.

I started off feeling bad for the raptors. By kill #800, I was pulling out one of my other raptor pets (I cycled through) in hopes of making them feel sorry for me.That only lasted another hundred kills; I quickly began enjoying tormenting my own pets with the death of their relatives.

By kill #1000, I delighted in their corpses keening in agony in unison and keeling over all together in a semicircle pile at my feet, knowing that I had many hatchlings in my thrall.

I will be honest: the only reason I kept at it was because I am stubborn, and I didn't want to put all that work in to simply buy it. Also, I wanted to post my numbers. Foolish me, I thought it would come in closer to 500 or maybe even 1000.

One thousand. Seven hundred. And four.

So, if you decide to farm, remember, RNG is RNG is ... random.

I believe the 0.2% drop rate chance of the deviate hatchling item is not right or close to right because when i do wailing caverns for this pet I usually get it all the time sometimes i dont but 2 hours later when i go for my 5 runs again i get it so i would say there is about a 5%-10% maybe 20% drop chance of this pet.

I was very very lucky as I didn't get mine from the dungeon...I got mine from a satchel of exotic mysteries. Which I think wow head should update because it is not included as available to get in the satchel.

If you are after this pet you need alot of patience... You will most like get your first one in the first 5 Runs and then your second one in the next 50 runs so it depends it is really a random random drop. Your best bet is to just keep farming them.

If you are after the pet to sell it here is some tips to get even extra gold out of Wailing Caverns.

While you farm Deviate Hatchling the following 2 recipes might drop aswell. I got 2 of each in 150 runs.

1: Schematic: Large Seaforium Charge

2: Schematic: Small Seaforium Charge

Now they sell for over 200 gold atleast and if there is nothing on your AH you can push it to close 1000 gold.

I just got this last night on what used to be my lvl 19 twink. I turned on xp and figured I give it a go at a random dungeon.
This thing dropped on my first run through and I didn't realize what it was until I checked the AH. Anyway, I'm gonna run through a few more times to see if it drops again.

So I've been on and off farming this item for a while now, but today it suddenly dawned on me what I'm doing. I'm going around, hunting down and slaughtering raptors by the hundreds so that I can kidnap their orphan children and then lock them in cages for my collection and amusement. Suddenly pet farming seems like an incredibly sinister activity...

Got 2 on my first ever run through Wailing Caverns. Kept one, but the other on the AH. Still doesn't make up for all those hours spent fishing for Ironjaw, Mr. Pinchy, Sewer Rate, and the Turtle Pet, never mind Old Crafty, not one of which has dropped yet for me.

I just got this from a deviate raptor in wailing caverns as a starter account... I have played that instance at least once per hour on the random dungeon finder and without looking for this pet it took me a week of playing to get this drop. It is possible but not probable, seems the drop rate is miniscule but hey, it's a cool little guy. (Wish I could name companions so I could call him Chomper)

Thought I'd do a post laying out the different color variants of the hatchings, having recently completed my collection. I won't get into where each one comes from, as each link has plenty on that.

It's interesting that some of the hatchlings have very defined stripes on their backs, while others have less defined stripes and more like splotches/lines of color.

They are:
Darting Hatchling - Orange with cyan stripes and green eyes
Deviate Hatchling - Purple with cyan stripes and yellow eyes
Gundrak Hatchling - Cyan with dark blue splotches. Yellow eyes.
Leaping Hatchling - Dark Cyan, almost slate with violet splotches and yellow eyes
Obsidian Hatchling - Olive and sort of grey-purple with aqua splotches and yellow eyes (and round pupils, oddly enough)
Ravasaur Hatchling - Lime green with orange stripes and squinting orange eyes
Razormaw Hatchling - Light yellow-orange with blue stripes and green eyes
Razzashi Hatchling - Red/Burnt orange with green splotches. Cyan eyes.
Lashtail Hatchling - as the unique reward from An Old Friend, your 'aka has a slightly unique model. She's a bit bigger than the others, and has a more defined "beak" color. She also has large round eyes with round black pupils, whereas the others have the classic dinosaur thin line pupils. That aside, her colors are almost identical to Razzashi's, but with much larger stripes.

Most of the hatchlings do an idle roar(more of a screech really) animation/sound, with a few exceptions. One wanders around and leaps back to you with a screech when out of range (Leaping), one will tear off running around with a dust trail a la Egbert (Darting), and Lashtail reportedly will play with the bones of your fallen enemies.
(I could have sworn I'd seen a raptor other than Darting do the run but couldn't get him to do it, would like confirmation if anyone sees it)

i had insane luck!

i was farming random instances with my friend druid and we decided to try beat ZA for mount, entered an all ready started ZA so we left party... Ofc resulting with 30 min deserter debuff >.< ok, what can we do in 30 mins? Took us 23 minutes to agree that we will to to WC to farm this pet.

We were in WC and 5 minutes left for debuff to cool off, so we entered joking that it's a waste of time (but we had to waste it) and group loot is on. I killed first raptor and second one, went to loot it and BAM there it was, DROP from FIRST MOB as i start yelling on skype he yells back "I've got it too!" wait wut? DROP FROM FIRST MOB AND FROM SECOND ONE ? Talk bout luck!

Just left us with enough time to heartstone and que ZA :)

btw i've got bear mount too :) lucky day!

Farming this just got a whole lot easier in MoP with AOE loot, and the increase of misses low levels will do on higher levels.

Simply run a loop through the upper ring of the dungeon and straight through the raptors, aggroing all of them, then AOE kill them. Then, thanks to MoP, all you have to do is loot one and you will see if you have gotten a Deviate Hatchling out of the kill. If not, run out of the dungeon, right click your character's portrait, and click Reset all Instances. You can run it 5 times an hour.

Make sure if you have a pet it's on passive, the raptors will miss hitting you most of the time, but if they do score a hit your pet will kill them and no loot will be awarded.

Decided to try again for this today. Did my 5 instance limit, went and killed Kor'kron commanders and escorted caravans for a while, then came back and started another 5 runs. Got it on my 9th run. All up around 45 min farming time.

It seems that there is a chance (however small) to obtain this from the Treasures of the Thunder King obtained through LFR. One just dropped out of the bag I received from killing the third boss. Slightly took the edge off of a third bonus roll in a row with no loot...

I rather like this pet.. in hard times he's reliably sold for 500-1000gold, and he's very cute! Strangely, however, one time I actually got him from BlackFathomDepths! I don't know how this happened, but.. I did. Maybe one of the monsters there has an incredibly low chance of dropping it? <(^(oo)^)>

3 Years ago or so i got extremely lucky and got 3 of them in a Row,and that in the same Instance,And i didn't even knew there was such Pet in the first place,However i Calculated the Rate that this could Happen and it is 1 to 1,000,000,000 so almost impossible.

This pet is easily looked over in your bag if you don't notice that you picked it up in the first place. I sold it to a vendor before I realized what I had done. Its certainly worth more than 25s.

This really is about RNG! Everyone has different experiences farming this guy. So while there are people who are very lucky, there are people who are very unlucky.

My own personal experience took 16 runs through before mine dropped.

This pet drops from Deviate Guardians and Deviate Ravagers, both found in Wailing Caverns in the first large cave inside the instance.

Run through and kill all 24 raptors, leave and reset. Make sure to loot! ;)

I remember a time when after 5 resets it would lock you out of entering any more instances. I am not sure if this has changed, was just a glitch or what but I reset and ran this 15 times before it stopped me. I waited 10 minutes tried to enter and it let me in. The 16 run was my lucky run.
