Unlike Mojo, from the latest patch, this pet drops off a 5 man instance instead of a 10 man raid.
So even if you don't have time to raid you can still farm for this pet.

I "upgraded" to this non-combat pet from the Green Wing Macaw that I've had since my first VC run. It really is very cool, and one of the few eye catching non-combat pets out there, with the only others that I can think of off the top of my head being banana and murky, which can't be as easily acquired (or acquired at all in the case of murky).

I got this tonight too on my first MT run. This NC pet is very cool looking especially when trailing behind your mount. With regards to the instance, in my opinion, it was a very fun and well designed dungeon however I thought the Kael'Thas fight was kinda lame but hopefully it'll be much cooler on heroic mode.

Just a note, when commenting on new creatures with existing animations, they do not modify the models. They create a new model, and rig the model and apply the existing animations to it. So this is a new model, but an existing animation.

This is the same with a lot of animations on models in the game, due to the huge amount of time it would take to give each and every model its own set of animations.

The Phoenix Hatchling doesn't make a noise when you click it and doesnt make a wing flutter noise when you are close to it.
Unlike most 'blue' pets, this pet is silent.

Finally got mine today! Took about 30-35 runs, lost the roll on three and managed to get my latest group to all pass it to me! Good luck to whoever is trying for one, it can be rough.

If you plan on farming for it, the best setup I felt we ran was prot or ret paladin tanking, 2 mages, SP and a healer. We had the runs down to 20-25 minutes after we got it down pat.

people were getting angry because someone had needed this on heroic Magister's Terrace, but if you can get it on normal as well, would that not increase the chance of it dropping as you can reset and get to Kael'thas much quicker?

It does have a low drop rate. Got mine on the second normal run (Very lucky), so it does drop in Normal Mode.

My best guess about Blizz actually getting the idea of giving him a non-combat pet would be:
After the fight in The Eye he didn't die. But asuming from the drop http://www.wowhead.com/?item=32458 Ashes of Al'ar. Kael'thas lost his mount. He still needs a mount and is now raising a new Phoenix. Of my own opinion this is a very possible solution to the question why they made it.

btw i just go this pett on my warrior.. and want to point out.. somehow .. randomly when i was running it looked like it ate somthing and grew.. said it had a buff called "pet biscut" and said under it that "increased in size" and lasted tilll i dismissed it.. just pointing it out

In patch 2.4.3, numerous flying non-combat pets have had their flight height modified to no longer skim along the ground. This includes captured firefly, dragonhawk hatchlings, moths, owls, parrots, phoenix hatchling, spirit of summer, sprite darter, and tiny sporebat.

For anyone who may be wanting to complete some runs for this little guy I was able to 3-man MgT heroic last night with a lvl 80 warlock, lvl 77 pally, and myself (lvl 80 feral druid). Incredibly easy, incredibly quick. The hachling dropped on the first run, somehow the lock and I tied with a 100 roll, I subsequently lost 26 - 15 QQ

I'm a Beast Mastery hunter with a Gorilla pet, wearing Naxx gear and I was able to solo this the following way:

First and foremost avoid aggroing the small packs as much as possible - makes the run a lot quicker. If you do, just like the 5man version, go for healers/casters first. I'd reccomend using some buff food and possibly flasking for your first few tries :)

Selin Fireheart is pretty easy - pure tank and spank.

Vexxalus is somewhat more challanging. I killed the little wyrms in the room and made sure I had the buff from the as I engaged the boss. Make sure you do this quickly as the buff fades in 20 seconds. When orbs appear you can use Feign Death or have your pet pick them up. Speed is key here as he progressivly does more damage. Save Last Stand until the boss overloads.

Priestess Delrissa is the most challenging encounter of the run - it largely depends on what group composition you get for this. Two healers and it becomes very difficult. You can use your Freezing Arrow to trap one of the melee mobs. Focus on healer mob first, then the lower hp ones, then finally the boss herself.

Keal'thas is fairly straightforward - remember to kite the bird and burn him down as soon as possible, making sure he dies away from your pet. Levitation phase your pet will continue to dps as he's nota affected by it and you can shoot from the air, while avoiding the orbs.

I've done 4 runs so far (each taking about 30 mins) and no pet so far - good luck.

I don't know exactly which patch it was (it's been a few months at least) but the phoenix hatching does have a noise now. It makes a little squawk and if you listen very carefully, you can hear faint flames in the background. I love that it's no longer silent :)

I really hate this. I had been trying to solo farm this for days, but the one time i'm in a group it drops and the hunter gets it even though he didnt even need it... I hate it when stuff like that happens.

Just another confirmation on the drop rate. Never been there prior,myself and husband decided to give it a try on our DK's. Easily soloed on Normal mode, and the Phoenix Hatchling dropped. Shocked was an understament. Not only do I have poor luck with drops, (still trying for my darn Polar Bear), but I have drooled over the Phoenix Hatchling since it B.C. came out.
For those of you still trying, dont give up! I'll cross my fingers for you! =)

I have been looking into whether or not it drops in reg and i finally found 2 diff ppl on my serer that confirm that it does, tho the drop rate is considerably lower in reg MgT. So just wanted to pass that along if anyone else wanted to make sure before they started farmin for her.

Solo'd this last night on an Enhance shaman, full 213's/226's. Avoid all packs you can, always hex the healer guy, pull your wolves out for bosses.

Honestly the most difficult part of the instance was the mana wyrms before vexalus. Dropped magma totem, earthbind, and ran. Just keep kiting them back thru to the first boss room, dropping magma totems every couple feet.

First boss is cake, 2nd boss i popped bloodlust to burn him down quick. Arena boss was quite easy also, (i got shaman, rogue, mage, engineer). On Kael himself, I popped bloodlust again, and didn't even get a phoenix spawn. had him to 45% in about 20 sec. then just burned him thru the bubbles.

Key to surviving. USE MAELSTROM WEAPON TO HEAL YOURSELF. Not LB/CL, unless your full or nearly full life.

I didn't get this little guy to drop, but I plan on farming until i can get it.

Total time to solo: 20 min

All this talk and no1 tells this: when u come to prince if u down him fast enough and dont allow him to spawn phoenix u will get PET for shure! i farmed mgt for mount and every time when he didnt spawn phoenix he droped PET

Sad when a legitimate post like BigT's is downrated. He has it correct: if you are able to dps Kael fast enough to 50% (and with a little bit of luck) he will NOT spawn the phoenix and will enter phase 2 (gravity lapse). The hatching drop then becomes 100%.

This makes the hatchling a ridiculously easy farm for a level 80, because you can clear to Kael and just wipe/reset him until you are able to enter phase 2 without the phoenix being spawned.

Before downrating my comment, go check it out and see for yourself.

Well if I had one of these I would test this myself - but perhaps someone should find out if "Sound Quality" makes the difference. It may be that it does make a sound, but you have to turn up the quality on your sound options in order to get that channel.

I just got a new computer and new sound system, cranked up the sound quality channels and the graphics - then I discovered that there are are some sounds I never heard before in game along with many graphics I've never noticed before.

I don't understand the point of rating down everyone who says it makes no sound and rating up everyone who says it does. I doubt only people with the pet are voting, and the point of rating comments is not to say what you wish were true. I've had this pet for ages (sound quality set to the maximum) and it has never made any sound.

I wonder if he only makes a noise in some versions of the game. I am using the English-language european version.

EDIT:

A couple of days ago it started squawking when I click it and, so far, hasn't stopped (the sound seems to work everywhere, although the first "squawk" was inside the Nexus). I'm guessing something was fixed in the last patch (3.1.3). If your phoenix made no noise, check it again, it may have found its voice.

I've had this Pet for some time now. He's always Squacked/Squeeked for me. Sounds like a baby bird (of what origins I couldn't say, but who does know what phoenix really sounds like...)

But yeah I always click my pets to hear them "talk", (mostly for cuteness factor. Love my netherwhelp.)

The Phoenix hatchling does make a noise. I play on an average computer, no changes to default sound settings (only graphics settings0 and i hear him just fine when my Character is "faced" towards him. (or if the pet is on my left side I still hear it but only on my left speaker. (Wow go figure.)

To sum up, On default sound settings i hear my Phoenix just fine. had him for ages and he "talks" everywhere I go.

This drops one out of every fifteen times. Had the same friend who gave my the hyacinth macaw run this to get it for me. It dropped, but this is a BoP item. :( Still, a very cute and unique pet. To anyone who needs that last pet to get their 50 or 75 pets achievement, this one should be pretty easy, as the drop rate isn't that bad.

I've been soloing regular MGT on my druid (4/5 T7.5 resto gear, re-spec'd Balance for the instance :) for about a week now, I've killed Kael'thas a bunch of times (~10, I think) and the pet has yet to drop.

Here's a few things I found useful:

- Use stealth in cat form to bypass trash mobs -- it saves you a lot of time. If by any chance they aggro on you and you're not prepared to take them on, revert to caster form and use Shadowmeld. That usually makes them reset. For the record, Shadowmeld also works during boss encounters (it worked on Kael'thas a couple times for me)

- If you have to take down trash mobs, use Treants and CC (Entangling Roots or Cyclone) to keep the casters busy, and always kill the Blood Knights first as they have a 4k+ heal they can cast. The cast can be interrupted with Typhoon.

- Mana wyrms before Vexallus can be burned down easily with Hurricane. Be sure to cast Barkskin first if you're undergeared.

- Also on Vexallus, be sure to kill the Pure Energies that spawn. They have 40 HP on regular, so a quick Moonfire should get rid of them instantly. Here's the macro I use during this fight:

/tar Pure Energy
/cast Moonfire
/tar Vexallus

Pure Energies give a +50% damage buff that stacks, making this boss fairly easy if you're careful. For the record, they can't be AoE'd.

- When fighting Priestess Delrissa, always CC / kill the mobs that stun / fear / interrupt first. (Those would be Eramas Brightblaze, Kagani Nightstrike, and Ellrys Duskhallow). You can use your Treants to keep the other mobs busy while you kill these. If you have decent DPS, you won't have to worry about Delrissa's heals.

Easy to get now with 2 people. I went in full Ulduar gear with a fully-geared druid, took 15 minutes per run.

I also went w/ a DK to tank, took under 10 minutes every run, got the pet after just a couple tries. No need to go Heroic mode for it.

You DO technically fight a Phoenix that Kael'Thas summons during the fight. So that may be where it would be coming from :)

It appears that with patch 3.2.2 this little buddy will now fly around in the air with you. I am pretty sure I recall watching him flutter along the ground as I flew off until he despawned, previously.

I for one and loving the "fix" though. I can only assume Blizzard got around to doing this for the sake of the Onyxia whelp.

Edit: On the other hand, he appears to be going a decent amount faster than my flight form and it is just a bit annoying that he is constantly playing ping-pong with my tailfeathers.

Soloed normal difficulty as a ret/holy dual spec Paladin in heroic gear (ilvl 200). Also soloed as blood tank DK with average ilvl of around 214. It took my DK 5 runs for this pet and my pal 32 runs.

Paladin strategy:

Most fights were fairly straight forward. I went ret and used Retribution Aura, Blessing of Might, and Seal of Command. For combat, I used Repentance against groups with more than 2 enemies then just AOEd them to death using Consecration, Divine Storm, along with Exorcism, Crusader Strike, and Judgement of Light.

Some fights that required special strategy were:

Sunblade Magisters - Watch out for their Arcane Nova (1.5 sec cast time). If you get interrupted, you can't cast any spells in that school for 6 seconds. It's not a bad idea to either Repent these or kill these first.

2nd boss, Vexallus - This is the hardest fight due to the amount of damage he deals. For this fight, I used Seal of Light for the extra healing. Whenever Art of War procced, I cast Flash of Light. I killed the adds instantly whenever they spawned. Like totems, AOE won't affect them and you have to target them manually. Once the boss gets down to around 30k HP, I activate Divine Protection and finish him off.

4th boss, Kael'thas - Another easy fight with a few notes. Kill his Phoenix immediately. Once the Phonix is dead, it'll leave an egg. Kill the egg immediately. Resume fighting Kael'thas and repeat as necessary if he summons Phoenix again. Depending on your DPS, you probably won't have to fight a Phoenix more than once. Once Kael starts using Gravity Lapse, just stay away from the orbs. Every time you get the chance, go close to him to lay down Consecration, use Judgement of Light, etc.

Each run takes about 15 minutes and you'll make around 50g per run.

DK strategy:

There was nothing special, really. As tank, I rarely took damage. On the few occasions I took damage, I had my blood self healing spells. Vexallus did noticeable damage but nothing I couldn't dps/heal through. Each run took about 25 minutes per run.

This pet will keep up with you while you fly, and won't simply stay near the ground and disappear.
Other pets that do this include dragonhawks, moths, tickbird hatchlings, and tiny sporebats. I'm guessing Nether Ray Fry also do, but I don't have one to test it out. Same with fireflies.

To test it easily, use flight form, fly up high, and see if the pet falls or floats.

The phoenix hatchling would look awesome with the Ashes of Al'ar! Unfortunately the dragon whelpling pets can't follow you in the air like the phoenix can which I personally think is silly... they have wings for a reason don't they?

Kael'thas Sunstrider is so buggy in the airphase that most of the times, it resets 4-5 times before I manage to kill the boss. Its easy to solo heroic/normal as paladin (tank on all bosses except last, where I go retri), but since the last boss resets so many times its not worth my time to grind for this pet. GL to all you who have the patience to see a boss reset time after time.

Just droped mine on normal and i notest the phoenix was still alive that spowns during the fight when i killed the boss. Done runs in the passed only after the mount and never seen this happen before and never seen the drops. So maybe or maybe not something to do with it dropping.

Some people say it only dropped for them once they killed the egg, some people say it only dropped when they left the phoenix alive...

It's completely meaningless what you do during the bossfight, any special methods etc has no effect on the drop chances of this pet.

Only RNG decides :)

I'd rate the difficulty as a "low to medium" to solo Heroic MGT for this every day as Feral Druid (I picked Heroic because the drop rate has always been better for me there).

Stealth through all Trash. The only trash I hit are the packs before first boss because of adding into the boss fight, the mana wyrms, and the one group right before Kael.

First Boss: Easy. Stay in Bear form and treat him like any other mob you've ever tanked. Due to LOTP heals I end the fight with 100% health.

Mana Wyrms: Hardest part of entire instance. Must pull atleast in 2 packs, prefer 4 for safety/quickness. If pulled all at once your Swipe will be crud for Dmg (due to AoE changes AoE's always do damage as if they were hitting 10 targets, means your Swipes will hit for like 50 if all are on you), and their little explosion when they die can actually be deadly in multipled so much.

Second Boss: Easy. The damage boost you get from the Sparks makes this a quick fight.

Third Boss: Easy to Medium, depending the classes present. The damage is low and they haven't much health, but if you get a lot of classes with CC and annoying abilities they can actually become an annoyance and whittle your health down, no danger of dying though may have to pop CDs like Frenzied Regen.

Final Boss: Medium. I usually start fight in Cat to burn him quickly, switch to bear when he nears the 50% mark or phoenix comes (only if you arent fast enough), so I can pop Frenzied regen before Gravity Lapse. Then on Gravity Lapse you should be over 50% health thanks to F-Regen, and you can go cat and just keep your Bleed DoTs on him as you run around away from the balls, and he usually falls for me around the start of second Gravity Lapse.

I farmed until I had this pet, the orb, and all the old patterns I missed in BC.

I've been soloing MT for this pet on normal for months now on my elemental shaman (icc 10 geared) and not yet gotten it, attempting MT every other day.

A few tips for those other ele shammies soloing it.

1 - Don't use thunderstorm unless you know there are no packs of mobs around the area.

2 - Make use of both earthbind totem and magma totem on the trash

3 - On large packs of mobs remember to cast hex on one of them and pull the rest back

It didn't take much to farm this pet. I wasn't actually going to MT for the pet, rather the Shattered Sun rep. Soloed as an 80 prot Pally, mostly 232/251 gear, easysauce. This little guy dropped after my third Kael'thas kill.

This was a really fun, easy instance to me. Since I never went at 70 I suppose I was missing out on the group aspect rather than the 'tank-everything-to-death' side.

In a single attempt to retrieve this pet, I got it. Much to my glee! I spent two months farming for a firefly and one go at the phoenix, I think it was karmic justice but really, he spawned a phoenix on me twice when I solo'ed with my 80 Prot. pally, It was totally worth the attempt to add this beautiful creature to my collection.

My absolute favorite pet in the game. I got this guy while actually farming for the mount, and this beauty dropped on Heroic mode. I have a macro for him so I make sure he's always out! Very flattering pet!

As far as the mount goes, I've farmed Heroic everyday for about 2 months. I can't solo heroic, so I have someone go with me. The mount has dropped once in those two months and my tank won it. -.- LOL I see him riding it around though, and he did win it fairly. So, meh. Hehe. I'll get it someday!

Alright I was a newbie, I thought that it only drops on HC and I was doing it daily with a friend of mine (healer), and it dropped and my friend won it. Then I checked AtlastLoot and I saw that it drops on normal aswel, and I started farming 30 minutes ago, after 5 runs on normal (solo-ed it, im a ret paladin) it dropped. So happy <3

Well! I got incredibly lucky, the pet dropped on my first solo attempt.

Soloed normal mode as frost/arcane pvp mage in 5010 raid dps gear, here's the spec:

Invisibility, as always, is handy for skipping trash, but otherwise you can do what frost mages always do... elemental, freeze, icy veins, blizzard spam.

Selin Fireheart: Open the attack with your elemental, and keep your threat low until it's near death or dead. Kill the first crystal, but by the time the second comes around you should be able to burn him down. Maintain shields, you may have to use a health potion. He's probably the hardest fight for mages.

Vexallus: Might be easy to die, but I didn't. Watch your shields and pound him fast, using Ice Lance on the energies to boost your damage by a ton.

Delrissa and friends: Just like a trash pull. Don't bother with poly, just have elemental attack Delrissa and use freeze as the first waterbolt hits, then icy veins/trinkets and blizzard. It's possible to be hit by fear here, but Mage Armor will kill it early.

Kael'thas: Park him at 55% or thereabouts, and deal with any phoenix and its egg before dropping him past 50%. You can fireblast while flying, but it's really unnecessary - as long as you don't go too near a bubble, the zonewide dot won't get past your ice barrier. The whole fight is about waiting for opportunities.

I got my mount on the first time through, and I and a friend have got four pets on the six tries afterward. He has a pet on his main and alt, and I have two pets on my alt (one just sits in my bank).

It surprises me that anyone farms this little guy for longer than a week. But he's a boss little pet.

Either luck, or just thats the trigger, this pet dropped for me not 1, but 2 times.. I was with a DK..he won first one, I asked if we could run some till I get the pet.. only 3 runs today, didnt finish heroic ...we left the phoenix kael summons alive both of those times.. maybe thats the trigger for it to drop or was that pure luck?

Solo'd this on norm a few minutes ago with my dk tank for the attunement of the heroic version, this little guy dropped and this was my first time completing. Last time I ran it i was lvl 74 and we didnt finish it so...I guess I was lucky lets hope I have the same luck for the mount on heroic ha!

its a easy solo just burned him down with army of dead/ dancing rune weapon to about 80k hp then he used gravity thing, stay away from bubbles, use your ranged abilities, go in for a death strike but not to long because of bubbles and thats it pretty much

Reading everyone's comments on how to do this is great! For demonology locks use hellfire throughout the whole thing and your felguard's axe spin thing every chance you get. On big mobs metaphorphisis w/immolation aura to dish out quick and not so painless hurt! Felguard is a good tank so let him aggro along with bane of doom on big bosses and curse of elements.

As an 85 DK I've been doing this instance every day and I got the hatchling today. As far as I can tell there is very little trash you actually have to fight here as most of it can be avoided due to its small aggro range. Here's what I end up fighting:

- The husks in the room of the first boss. I can't be bothered killing them on the way in so they are all called when I aggro him and I take them down alongside him.

- The small wyrms in the corridor to the next room, there's 5 of them I think.

And that's it. Everyone else is avoided and I just kill the bosses to open their doors. The only tip is to make sure you avoid killing the trash before the last boss because if you do, the boss doesn't give his stupid speech at the start and you get straight on with fighting him. Nothing else really needs a strategy as this class because it's trivial now.

This guy is extremely cute. Possibly one of the coolest (and most unique) pet in the game. Aside from the dark phoenix hatchling, which I believe nobody has gotten yet, this pet probably has one of the shiniest skins for non-combat pets.

After 80, farming regular Magister's Terrace is pretty easy. With the dramatic increase of stats after 80, it gets easier and easier. I was level 84 on my arms warrior, and stormed through the instance. AoE is extremely useful, as you can round up trash, and run to the boss and AoE everything down.

If you plan on farming the mount in the future, pick up the attunement quest for heroic mode, which starts with this if you're a Scryer, and this if you're Aldor. Also, you don't have to choose a side to pick up this quest. If you haven't picked yet, just pick up the Scryer quest if you're Horde, and the Aldor quest if you're Alliance.

It's very easy. Once you get to the island, they send you in the find a Blood Elf. Right when you enter the room with all of the Mana Wyrms, the elf is directly to your left. Or, you can just check your map. After that, kill the boss and go outside and click the orb. If you skip the cutscene, it should take a moment for Malygos to arrive. Just wait around. After you talk to him, plow your way to Kael'thas.

Some good armor pieces can drop, even epics in regular. If you want to be a nice person, offer to run people while you farm either reg/heroic. If you're worried about them stealing your mount/pet, just switch the loot system, and loot it all yourself, and trade it to the person. Who knows, maybe this will get you some karma and the pet will drop on your first try. "Yeah, like that'll happen!"

Happy hunting, and good luck! Farming can either keep you here for a few days, weeks, or possibly eternity, where fate completely hates you and everything that you are, and refuses to let the RNG give the pet to you. Or, you can get lucky like I did, and get it on your first try. Just sayin'

Update: Since I got my first phoenix, I've run heroic Magister's Terrace twice. The second time, the phoenix dropped again. If you aren't having much luck, just hang in there. This pet doesn't have an impossibly low drop rate. In fact, it even seems kind of high for how totally awesome he is!

This is a ridiculously easy pet to get now, it dropped on my fourth run soloing reg MT on my 83 hunter with each run taking about 10 minutes. I was going to wait until I got camouflage at 85 to bypass most of the pulls but after doing a test run, I realized there was no need to wait. Before that, I solo'd it on my 80 pally pre-Cata and back then the instance was only mildly tricky. Now it's a damn cakewalk. Seriously, get this pet before Blizzard removes it or something.

I've run MgT well over two dozen times today on my 85 Shaman and not gotten it yet but that's besides the point. There are literally no trash pulls necessary except the one in the first boss room. All other trash can be ignored provided you simply give them some leeway.

For anyone who wants a quick guide:

At the start you run down the middle then turn left or right to avoid the pat without wandering into the mobs on the side. Do the same at the entrance to the boss room. Here all you need to do is kill the Wretched then the boss.

The mana wyrms down that hall aren't elite and there's only 4 so I usually blast past them then run the hall with all of those wyrms floating about. They don't aggro unless you hit them. The next boss easy again. Just don't run into the wyrm wrangler and you'll be fine.

After that you simply run along the walls to avoid the constructs as you turn into that hallway. Avoid running into the pat or going too close to the center area or trash on the sides at the garden area. Usually I just run down the middle and turn off to a side when I come to the next mechanical pat.

After that it's the PVP boss encounter and then you just turn to the side again at the trash pack (I usually take a left to get the most space) right before Kael and take him down.

It's literally 6-8 minutes depending on your luck and familarity with the dungeon.

It seems the drop rate on this has been increased by a fair margin, either that or weird rng.

I've been farming this place since mid WotLK (for the white hawkstrider, yet to drop) and for the first 30 or so attempts I never saw this once then after the Cata patch I got it and since has dropped several times in a row on both my Lock and Druid. Wish the Hawkstrider would drop that much.

I always see those people, "yeah man, I got it on the first try", and I hate them, because apparently the rng gods hate me, I always have terrible drops on everything, but this time around, I got lucky:
So, I'm running normal mgt for the first time ever, and I'm glad because I know I just have to get a quest in the dungeon to start doing it on heroic. When Kalecgos arrives, I'm kinda baffled that he doesn't have quest for me, but I then find out that I have to get a starting quest from Shattrah before I can start the chain that grants heroic attunement. So I just get on with the dungeon, kill Kael'thas and guess, Phoenix Hatchling drop the first time I'm in here. I'm of course very happy, and I then proceed to do the quest chain, and therefore have to do it on normal yet another time. I finish the dungeon, nothing interesting drops, and then start doing it on heroic. On my first heroic, i get 2 drops of Suntouched Satchel, and, wait for it, A GODDAMN HAWKSTRIDER FROM KAEL'THAS. I couldn't believe my eyes, It really dropped, on my first ever heroic mgt run.

Well, that was just my little story of how the rng gods finally felt a little sorry for me, and gave me these drops.
I am grateful.

EDIT: Btw, did it as a lvl 85 fury warrior. The run was cake, never got under 100k health, never had to stop and eat food to heal or something like that, and I killed ALL mobs in the dungeon (for rep and disenchanting drops). So don't be afraid to solo it, it is very easy, and shouldn't cause you any trouble at all.

I got mine on the first try. Took my lvl 85 balance druid. Even the mana worms are easy when pulled and blasted with a combination of starfall, hurricane, and mushrooms.

If you want this pet, go get it. It's a free and awesome pet at max level :)

RNG can be so cruel sometimes, and I definatly seem to have the worst of it I think! Short list of ways RNG has made me QQ:
Server first Onyxia(60) on ally BL and never got my Judgement helm from her.

Binding dropped for my mage 7 months ago off of Baron Geddon. I have ran MC every week for the other, but nothing from Garr...I have seen THREE off of Geddon though.

And now my point: I got the mount off of Kael about a month ago, but no pet. The following day, another mount dropped. And then yesterday, I got a third...but still no pet.

Don't give up though guys, it is RNG and thus some get it what they are after on the first run through while others just need patience!

on a side note 1st (heroic) solo run i got the mount.

my .02 if you can stealth you only need to kill 3 trash mob packs. so fast you can clear and rerun in 5min or less.

I have run about 70 and i am getting ~~a bit~~ very annoyed.

Yet each time i see this little chucker in the loot bag, i get a moodchanger, and i suddenly feel that the run was worth it, even without the mount.

I've been farming this pet for about 2 weeks now. I run it once a day on my hunter. Kill the bosses, Camo past everything else. The mount has dropped twice for me now and still no pet. Fail !

Just solo'd this on my 85 Prot Pally. Very easy, can skip all the trash. Each run took less than 10 minutes including DEing gear. I hit the 5 instance/hour limit a couple of times.

Got it on my 11th run, had 1 heroic run and 10 normal. Was beginning to think it might be heroic only now, but it definitely drops on normal :)

I ran this with my 85 hunter about 19 times before I could no longer take the boredom. Right before I gave up I tried the heroic version and the pheonix dropped immediately! So weird O___e. But this is probably my favorite companion ever xD

I've done Heroic Magisters' Terrace 28 times now and I have yet to see this pet drop once. I've gotten 4 Orb of the Sin' Dorei ALL OF WHICH DROPPED FROM VEXALLUS (~1.5% drop chance)

That just seems a bit silly to me. I've seen the Orb drop 4 times on a 1.5% drop chance, but I have yet to see the pet (9% drop chance) or the mount (4% drop chance) a single time. I suppose this makes up for me acquiring the Raven Lord after only 20 runs.

(PROTIP: Skip the trash right in front of Kael'Thas, if you just walk right past them you don't have to listen to his aggro speech, the fight just starts)

Despite having to kill every boss to reach the end and having to listen to Kael'Thas' "My demise accomplishes nothing" speech, I still rather enjoy this instance, probably because of the architecture and scenery.

Got this on my tankadin today. First run through heroic magister's terrace with this toon. I was doing it just to get the achievement. Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the pet drop, because I'd always heard that the drop rate was very low. So, either I was exceedingly lucky or Blizz has increased the drop rate. Though I'm more inclined to believe the former in this case, although Blizz has been known to monkey with the drop rates of various pets in the past, so I suppose they could have with this one as well. However, simply because of the fact that this is one of the most coveted pets in the game, I have a hard time believing that they would up the drop rate on it.

Just some advice if you plan on doing a full clear like I did (I'm sure that had no bearing upon my chances of receiving the pet) --

#1) Use the corners to your advantage in order to line-of-sight the casters. There are many casters in this instance (no surprise there), and of course, your run will go much quicker if you are able to gather up multiple mobs at the same time and aoe them to death. So, again, line-of-sight the casters around a corner and then aoe the mobs en masse when they reach you.

#2) Turn your auto-loot on if you are going to be looting all of the corpses. Looting corpses takes much longer if you are having to single click every piece of loot.

I realize the above tips are tips in general for any type of farming, but it never ceases to amaze me how many players don't know them.

Just another useless tidbit -- It is pet #106 for me and it is by far the coolest looking pet out of them all! Oddly enough, I also saw Reins of the Drake of the North Wind drop for the first time today, and I won it to boot.

Just had this drop for me today after 11 runs (10 normal, 1 heroic). Soloed on my 85 DK with ease. Each run I'd say took less than 10 min - most mobs won't bother you if you keep your distance. Obviously, RNG is involved, but considering how cool this pet looks (arguably the most fantastic looking in the game), I'd say only having to sacrifice a few hours in MT is a HELL of a deal! I mean, comparatively speaking, how many other rare mounts/pets in the game have this good of a drop rate? Many are less than 1%. This could be my best pet yet, only my Kirin Tor familiar comes close.

I went in with my 85 hunter bm spec made it a lot easier and it was a breeze. I camoed past most mobs and got to kael'thas with in 5 minutes of entering or less. After my 11th attempt it finally dropped. It really isn't that bad of a drop rate. I also made a few hundred gold in the process and got some gear for my guild. The only down side was that because it took me so little time I had to wait 20 minutes until the next hour becasue you can only enter 5 times an hour which I feel is a very unfair amount but that is just me I suppose. i got this the first time i ran it on my pally. i didn't attack the bird. i just kept dps with the boss. did it in holy pally. had no trouble running though this dungeon at all. very easy.

Hi I never read any of the comments on a Wowhead item page before I make a comment. Oh and it dropped for me on the blah time when i was blah-ing with my friend (actually, she's my wife niece's best friend and it dropped for her every blah blah) and then blah and isn't this a fascinating, new addition to the body of knowledge.

I ran this dungeon for a few days, maybe up to 5 times each day. I got on this morning on my 85 mage and ran it solo, and it dropped, just like that. It's beautiful! My boyfriend is very jealous because we had been farming for it together lol. Anyway, the drop rate either isn't that bad or I got lucky.

I ran heroic Magister's Terrace 24 times before Kael dropped this. In that same time period I had 2 swift white hawkstriders drop. Don't lose heart, it will drop. If you want to get it out in one stretch do it on regular difficulty.

AWESOME PET! My favorite pet so far in the game! My boyfriend ran me through 5 times (I'm level 71 and he's 85).. We did it once on heroic, and then 4 more times on regular. After running me thru 4 times (since I like to stop and loot every mob and i was taking forever) on the 5th run he just had me wait by the door on the inside of the instance and he snuck through and just killed the bosses, all in all took him about 4 minutes... On the last one, when the fight with Kael'thas Sunstrider started, it sucked me right through the instance, right to the last boss... Tricky! I looted and there was the pet... Best present ever!

I think drop rates are much higher on normal mode. Farmed it for a while on HC (15+ kills) and didn't dropped. Then I tried a normal and I got on the first run (perheps I'm lucky though).

I have no real data to back my opinion, but as someone said before - farm it on Normal mode.
I started farming for mounts in Sethekk Halls and Magister's Terrace, and I forgot to switch to normal after I was done in Heroic Sethekk. Nothing dropped for me. First normal run in MT - phoenix dropped. Day after I ran MT twice, again phoenix dropped. Today it dropped again. So far for me the drop rate is 50% on Normal mode. I know I am lucky... but the drop rates got to be higher than they used to be, also my friends are getting this pet pretty easy after few runs.

Like many before, I was running the instance to farm reputation with the Shattered Sun Offensive Faction and the little thing dropped at my fifth run.

Pretty easy to get :)

So, was running MT for Rep as well as Pet and Mount drops.
As one of the unlucky few it seems, i did not get my pet on the 1st or 10th try, i lost count. Mount still hasn't dropped.
So I'm close to finish my Shatter Sun rep when I pet drops for me, YAY. I reset the run to finish the last 2% rep I need, get to last boss after finishing rep AND the pet drops again. No joke, the very run after getting the pet it drops again
>=D I'm keeping it for MoP, Hopefully can sell or trade it.XD

This pet, for as cool as it is, is not too bad to get. I ran normal MT 17 times and the pet dropped. At 85, most of the mobs you can surpass without even having to waste time killing them. Each run I did took no more than ten minutes. Very cool pet.

After exactly 30 kills of Kael'thas Sunstrider i got the hatchling on heroic. It must be my lucky week because i got the Fox Kit and Mr. Pinchy as well.

Still avail in Cata. Both on Heroic and Reg. A friend and I had been farming both reg and Heroic. Dropped last week for him on Heroic and on Reg a few days later for me.

I just got mine after who knows how many attempts. I had been doing Magister's every day on HC and then tonight heard that it dropped on normal. Three attempts on Normal and I now have the pet!

I'm starting to think the drop isn't in the loot table anymore. I have 47 kills (heroic then regular until it locks me out) and I've gotten 4 mount drops, not a single pet drop. Really? 11%? RNG is no fun :(

Edit: I also got through exalted 4 days ago. I wonder if the GM's or whoever are sitting there watching me endlessly farm this garbage instance for a pet, and hitting the "deny" every time I kill KT.

I just got this cutie today. It took me two days, 13 runs. Just run past trash and you'll do the instance within about 6 minutes. I asked, before I got it, a gamemaster if it was still obtainable in both normal and heroic. He said it was, but that the drop chance was low. Just persevere and you'll get it soon enough ^^.

have run mag terr about 35 times trying for this thing on my paladin xD its really all i want from the instance drops at all besides that sexy robes of the sindorei actually, well got the mount by now even (which hadnt been after at all, was dumbfounded to see it drop) and still no pet xD DAMMIT! least i got my hawkstrider i guess :p

Probably the best pet to be out there. I mean, I checked the local AH and it was sold for about 2000 Gold, wtf? It's a gorgeous pet. Something you do not want to sell. Especially during these battle pet times. I got it, when there was nothing about pet battles in WoW, so its special to me.

I just want to have Ashes of Al'ar to have with this pet and with me. :) And be as strong as my character is. At least almost that.

I was over-joyed to see this fella on the AH for 1500g! I bought it in a heart beat and I have been leveling him up ever-since. Great battle pet to have. I'm trying to get a trio of rares now that we can see the rares during battles. This was a GREAT addition to my trio. I like having pets that can either rez themselves or heal themselves and he heals! I highly recommend buying this guy if you see him for low cost on the AH, I'm having a lot of fun leveling him!

Actually, DaNefariouz hit it right on the nose. Even if the percent chance for each boss is 3%, the chance for the event happening at least once is more like 11.5%. Just because there's a 50% chance of a coin landing on heads, doesn't mean that after 100 coin flips, it has a 50% chance of being all heads.

Still obtainable in 5.1.0.

Got mine on my third day grinding for Shattered Sun Offensive reputation, it dropped on around 24th run, which is quite many runs considering the 8.26% drop chance (as Wowhead lists it right now), but I'm glad it dropped, because i would've ran the dungeon for the reputation anyways. I just hope the mount drops before i get Exalted with Shattered Sun Offensive.

Good luck to anyone trying to get this beauty!

Edit: The Phoenix Hatchling dropped the very next run too, so for me it dropped 2 out of 25 runs, which makes it (2/25)*100 = 8% drop rate per run. Also, I'm Exalted now and no mounts. Guess i will never get that mount.

Decided i would go get exalted today with SSO and best way to do that is farm rep. So I ran heroic MT.

First run got the mount.

Dont be i have 5 toons and have done Celestials every week on every char and ive only looted gold with a reroll of gold. I Would rather get prideful pieces than this mount but hey watevs

Coolest Battle Pet out there, but is not that great for battling... Losing to Lvl 13 Battle Pets, when at Lvl 15. Doesn't heal much and does less damage.
