DO NOT make this weapon for the DPS or "Chance on hit" as you will obtain better from outlands WITHIN THE FIRST FEW QUESTS!

However for some people this can be great for PvP due to it's "built in" icy enchant meaning it is free for +15agility, fiery, lifestealing or even another (stacking) icy enchant.
However the mats are so difficult to gather; the gems are rare drops from mines and the bars are made one by one by alchemists from a Thorium Bar and an Arcane Crystal with a 24 hour cooldown.
Blizzard should look into reducing the mats cost for this item as the Burning Crusade means this will not really last for enough time to show it's true worth in the PvE environment.
However that said this is a great piece for any melee class for several levels and can sell for twice the mats price on almost any day on a PvP intensive server.

Anyone notice how cool* it looks in-game? Get a pattern yourself and check. Not to mention its chance on hit is basically a free icey**, so if you wanted that in the first place you could chant it with a stat bonus or a different enchant.

* No pun intended, frostguard, cool. (Meaning there was a pun intended)
** I don't know if this icey effect loses power when affecting levels 61s+ like the normal icey enchant. If not this could be better than it seems. How about you wait for the only rare spawn that drops it and give it to a blacksmith who's gonna take a ton of time making it. Another thing is I can only name one other way of icey effecting over 60 monsters/players, Enchant Weapon - Deathfrost. Just search for it. But it may be hard to find DATA about it let alone it in the game.

This sword is first seen in the Orc Campaign in Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne. You get it off a dying soldier after you have Rexxar, Rokhan, Chen Stormstout and Jaina Proudmoore fight through an island of Naga.

I've built it and tested it.

First off, the thing is dang expensive to make - upwards of 400g. The gems required are most easily obtained from prospecting thorium ore, which is always pricey. The arcanite crystals and thorium bars required for the item itself are not cheap either.

It is too slow for effective use as a tanking weapon - at best it is, or rather might have been, a rogue or warrior main hand weapon.

The proc rate is low, 1ppm or so. It's not consistent or sufficiently long-lasting to be effective in either PvE or PvP. Don't expect to be able to use it to kite mobs or other players.

It has lower DPS than Outland world drop greens of the same level: http://www.wowhead.com/?item=25143.

It is a beauty to look at however - has the same model as the Bloodlord's Defender from ZG, in a brilliant blue color scheme, with a large, luminous orb that drips snowflakes rotating continuously around the blade. When you move or swing the sword, it leaves a blue trail.

For me, this is a keeper, merely because of its attractiveness and rarity. Sure to get inspects.

No, it's not the same model. Compare a screenshot of Frostguard with one of Bloodlord's Defender. BD has that distinctive "hood" on the top, while Frostguard is merely $%^ged along the edges.

When transmogrified it does not lose its original enchant but instead keeps it. No other enchants will overtake it.

The Frostguard (very popular for transmogrification due to its look and the floating ball of frost circling around it), is crafted by a Blacksmith with the Plans: Frostguard recipe. The recipe in turn can be obtained in two locations.

It is an extremely rare drop from the rare spawn Foreman Marcrid in Eastern Plaguelands, or it can be purchased from the vendor Daleohm in Winterspring for 8 gold (before discounts). The recipe is held in limited supply by Daleohm, but respawns in just a minute or two, so it will almost certainly be available for sale when you reach the vendor, and will be radically easier to obtain than camping and farming Foreman Marcrid. Note that Daleohm is NOT in Everlook, but instead is at the small campfire area at Mathoril at 58.1, 63.8.

The recipe is not Bind on Pickup, so it may also potentially be found on Auction House (or can be sold there), although recipe collectors would be advised to just fly up to Eastern Plaguelands and purchase it for 8 gold rather than pay likely-to-be-much-higher AH prices.

sorry if i sound stupid by saying this but if you use this for transmog then enchant your weapon with a glow effect will the wave circling the weapon take over the glow or the other way around or will it keep both?

The bright orbiting frost animation is unique to this sword, and overlaps any enchant when transmogged.

It bears a strong similarity in appearance to all of the orb items from Warcraft III which would encircle a hero's weapon in the same way. This looks great on more "classic" transmog sets.
